Our rescued dappled doxie Gaudi had quite a "bad" epilepsy seizure today. He was bug-eyed and staring at the wall as though seeing strange things and moving his paws on one side of his body as he lay on his side. And trembling all over. Then he made noises in his throat so I got him outside where he did his usual epilepsy thing of staggering about and throwing up. Then as usual he sat in the grass for about a half hour before coming inside and falling asleep. He has one of these about every 3-4 months. Our Wotan also has epilepsy but his is more like grand mal seizures with the leg paddling and stiffness and he never throws up. I hate so much to see our dachsie boys go through this! Anyone else out there have dachsies with epilepsy?

I'm so sorry about Gaudi. I can imagine that would be very hard watching your pupper go through that. I don't have any knowledge of epilesy but wanted to let you know that I'm thinking of you and Gaundi today. I found an artcle an epilepsy and some treatments that may be of interest to you http://www.petinformationcenter.com/dogs/epilepsy.htm.

It might not be epilepsy. Sometimes if they eat something that gets stuck in their throat it can cut off their air and cause seizure like symptoms. Once they throw up they are ok. One of our wires got on the dining room table once before the food was cleared. He knew he wasn't supposed to be there so he ate as much as he could as fast as he could, including whole pieces of boiled potato. He would try to throw up, the potato would lodge in his throat, cut off his air and he would pass out. When he relaxed, he would get oxygen again, come to and start over again. We rushed him to the vet because we didn't know what was going on. Just as we got there he finally managed to throw up and was shaky but fine.
On the other hand several of my dachsies have had seizures but not so frequent as to truly be diagnosed with epilepsy or require medication. They may have one seizure in their lifetime or one or two a year. The vet doesn't know why but they have all been over 10 years when it has happened.

http://www.canine-epilepsy.net is (I believe) part of a university program for info on canine epilepsy. Maybe you can find some useful info here.

Gosh, so sorry to hear that. Is it possible that he may be having pain? Twix had a seizure one night and I took her to the emergency vet and they said they thought it was due to pain. That some dogs have strange reactions to pain and that is the only time it has happened to her. Another doxie I had once had a seizure just one time that I know of and was fine. Wierd, huh? Twix and I will be thinking of you all.

Gosh, I feel for ya. Has Gaudi & Woton been to the Vet? If so, what info was given to you? It pretty much sounds like medication is not necessary if the episodes are every so often (like in your case, 3-4 mo.). Is that true? So I guess there is no need to panic then, huh? I know I WOULD be freakin! How old were your boys when they started these seizures? I think I'll read up on this, as seizures are not uncommon in dachsies, I'm reading more and more stories.
Please keep us posted.

Of all the epilepsy I have seen & heard about, I've never heard of a dog vomiting afterwards. I'm not saying it's not possible, but it makes me wonder if it was a seizure or something else. He wasn't chewing on a rawhide, by chance, was he? Some dogs get a little too greedy, & swallow too-large a chunk, & it gets kind of caught going down.
Pay attention to what he was doing just before these episodes happen; it will help the vet make a diagnosis.

Thank you for your responses. Wotan first had a seizure when he was about 5 years old and Gaudi already had them when we adopted him at age about 2 1/2. I have read that many dogs lose control of their bowels etc. when they have a seizure. Wotan never has but Gaudi always throws up. They have been to 3 different vets about this problem and what they say (paraphrased): "Well, I don't know. I guess it's epilepsy as the symptoms sounds most like that. There are no test for epilepsy." Gaudi has never been eating during or before a seizure. BTW Jennifer I tried your link several nights and I just get a "404 not found" when clicking on it.

There is no test for epilepsy, but there ARE tests for things that can kind of mimic epilepsy, & those things should be ruled out. Epilepsy is usually the diagnosis AFTER some other tests are run to rule out other possibilities.
Did you check out the epilepsy website? They also have a discussion board there for people like you, who have dogs with this problem.

Thanks Hceci and Toby for your concern. Gaudi always seems fine in between his epilepsy fits which happen 3 or 4 times a year (fine that is except for that time in May when his back got bad and he had to go to Seattle vet hospital and then be on month long crate rest.) He's doing well right now. Thanks for your concern....he sends dachsie licks to Toby.
