Oscar's problem was his anal glands. One of them was filled with solid stuff so maybe the girl who checked them for us thought they were empty because it didn't empty easy. At the vets they empty them from the inside not from pressing on the outside. I just cannot bring my self to attempt to empty them myself. When I take Oscar in just for that its $10, about every 6 weeks.

Oscar has always had trouble with his anal sacs. This past weekend and he scooting, licking his bum alot, biting his leg and crying about it (all things he does when the glands are full). So I figured his glands must be full. A friend of my husbands friend is a vet tech, we hardly know her but she said she would express them for us. So hubby brought him over there and one gland was empty and the other only had a little stuff in it.
So, now I'm confused. Any other reason he would be licking his bum all the time?
He has a semi-annual check up in 2 weeks so I'll be sure to ask about it.

Hmmmm... Possible worms. Take a stool sample into the vets and drop it off, they don't have to see him to diagnose it if there are wormies or parasites present.

Let me know what happens.

<IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm1.gif" border=0> I was just thinking, that with Fritz always licking there and being so uncomfortable that it really affects those sensitive nerves around there. I wish I could learn to express the glands myself. Oh can anyone explain it in detail? I tried to watch the vet and thought I could do it. But, no luck. Of course with Fritz being a biter and not very happy with toe nail clipping or anything for that matter. It is hard to keep him looking the happy dapper one that he should. And the barking at everything. Oh well I just love him to pieces. And I think he loves me too! So maybe the nerves down there never really feel good. I mean if we think about our own bodies and how , well you know. I just think it takes a long time and maybe never to feel alright. One person on here expresses glands I thought every 4 to 6 wks. Wow, we only take Fritz every 6 mo. And the cost has went up. Way up! Do check for worms, and I am surprised that in the 10 years we had Fritz he has never had them. Our labs always did. But, we would take them along to the family farm to run. Now we just take Fritz and Gretta to the camper and keep a good watch on them. Hope Oscar is feeling better soon. Fritz is beside me always growling or biting, licking at his back end and I feel he is in so much pain. OUCH!

Hey Rosalyn,
You should see if your vet will do this. Our last poochie had to have her anals expressed every so often but had nothing else the matter with her. The vet said if I wanted to bring her in more often just to get it done we could do it without actually having a consultation. They'd just take her in, squish, and bring her out. That way, I didn't have to pay for an office visit. Was much cheaper.
