View Full Version : Do you allow your dachsies to jump?

We let Chief jump in moderation. The bed is a no-no (although he occasionally does that too)..wanna hear my heart go a mile a minute???? We do let him jump off and on the couch as it is lower and we feel we shouldn't restrict him of being a dog but we do try to lessen all high jumps if possible.

Ditto what Loren said. No Bed jumping (but Woody has been known to roll off the bed in the middle of the night :D).

Woody has started to jump INTO the car when going somewhere. This wouldn't worry me, but I drive a 4x4 Blazer... it's not any higher than normal, but it is higher than a car.

The couch... that is alike another play toy for my boys... they use it to dive bomb each other :)

While I said that I let them do as they please there are a few exceptions to that. I would rather they ask for help getting down from the bed but they don't seem too eager to cooperate with than one. Dexter is the only boys who regulairly waits for me to set him down. Dexter and Tanner bot ask for assistance in getting up most of the time. I did make a point of impressing on dexter than he couldn't jump down form the top of the back of chairs and soffas afer I saw him about to take a big dive a couple of times. Dexter does jump up and down from the bed if I'm not there and he wants to take a nap. Frank thinks the whole world is omething con go throguh or over. He will push or climb his way through almost any thing. When Tanner junps down from the bed he tends to fet a lot of horizontal distance in his leap so he actually appears to land with less stress than when somone junps pretty much straight down. If we stop by the agility course at my vet;s office (they have one setup outside) all three boys like the jumps. Big boy Frank is too scared to go over the A-Frame. When I had Aggie it was interesting to watch her on the teeter. She was so small she had to get almost all the way to far end before it ould tilt down.

They do what they wish, but Gert can't jump up on things since her little back legs were never very strong.

I try to discourage it, but it's really hard especially with Miller. In the morning he feels it's his duty to leap on the bed when the alarm goes off, lick my face and launch himself off the ramp in the direction of the bedroom door.

They don't sleep in the bed but they do use the living room sofa/chair/ottoman. Angel would walk across the entire living room without touching the floor if allowed, from one piece of furniture to the next. :sarcastic

I really try to make them wait so I can lift them up and down, but that is difficult. My main worry is that they chase each other around and try to jump on and off things while fighting... I worry someone's going to get pushed off or twisted wrong.

I am really trying to enforce NO FIGHTING ON THE COUCH.

Am glad to hear others face the same challenges!!!:bounce: :bounce:

We do discourage our dogs from jumping off the bed, but as you all know it's really difficult to get a dachsie to listen sometimes. They have a mind of their own and ours think they are much bigger than they really are! :sarcastic

I wish I could stop Missy. Her behind is spring loaded. Boing, Boing, Boing all over the place. :bounce::bounce::bounce: She is so full of energy that I have to laugh at her sometimes. Mark says she's a total spaz. What was that streak that just rounded the bedroom door and split down the hall you ask? Why the Miss Moster of course.:D

I do have a ramp for the bed which she and Zeke use pretty faithfully and a small stool for the couch which they both like to use.

LC is not brave enough to jump off the bed...though he does sometimes. The bed is low -- frame is gone so he wouldn't go under there :flush: -- so so it's not far up. He's jumped off the couch a couple times too, but again, he isn't brave enough to do it all the time. He isn't big enough to jump up on either, but he tries.

Speaking of jumping, LC jumps when he is excited -- as well as other things when he's excited -- and I was wondering if this causes stress too? Should he have 4 feet on the ground 100% of the time?

jump from their low couch to the floor. That is it. I dont allow them on our bed as its too high.

please bottle that magic & I will pay you for it.:D

Probably bouncing around, especially on 2 legs, is a little stressful. Then again, running around & being active helps keep them healthy and at a normal weight... you know, just like people (hint to self: go to gym:sarcastic).

We try to encourage quality floor time... they do try to jump around on 2 legs so we are working on "down" (also because they need to calm down & stop jumping on people).

Our girls are allowed to jump off the low furniture and that is it, they are also allowed to go up and down steps. Yes I keep a close eye on them. However if you keep them from jumping entirely then they might as well not be living cause I know that doxies love to jump and low objects shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Yeah, life without jumping is no life for a dachsie, I was just wondering if that's the same thing as jumping on/off things.

Ugh, LC has figured out -- on HIS own -- how to go up steps. There are about 5 or 6 steps outside my apartment. He's been going up and down a hill next to the steps, but the last couple days he's gone up the steps. He won't attempt the stairs to go to the second floor though. The steps outside are a little lower then curbs.

In Moderation! Well we try.

Charlie is never on our bed so there is no problem there. But the couch is another matter. He waits about 1/2 the time for us to put him down.

Mario is not old enough to be let into the rest of the house yet but Alexis...she sometimes gets to doing zoomies & jumps on & off the couch but most of the time, she can jump onto the couch or bed but she knows she is supposed to wait for one of us to pick her up & put her off the furniture. Sometimes she doesn't do what she is "supposed" to do though.

Our house is on one floor with only 1 step out the door to the yard.

Oscar is too short to jump up on the couch or chair. Little Buck used to do that all the time - but persistance broke him of that habit.

I don't have an issue with jumping up...it's the jumping down that causes stress on their backs.

They have their own futon now with the big dog bed in front of it. That is just a soft hop up or down. I think they like this arrangement the best because Oscar feels like a big man now....he can get up on a 'couch' and they both love to have the back of the futon folded down and they climb into that space like a tunnel bed.

The bedrooms are out of bounds to them with the doors closed when they are loose in the house...so no way they can get up on or jump down from the big bed.

We really try to limit it but ours are standards so they are large enough that they can get up on the couch and bed and so they do. Josh and Gabe like to sit on the computer chair. Ours will often wait to be lifted down off the bed sometimes and other times they jump before you can get them. They do jump on and off the couch and recliner as they please.

I do not "allow" either of mine to jump. That being said, Lexie uses the ramp from sofa to floor about 75% of the time, Jack only about 25% of the time because I haven't been as religious working with Jack to use the ramp. Lexie uses the ramp down the front stairs 99% of the time, and both of them use the ramp down the back stairs 100% of the time. (Jumping up isn't the problem, as mentioned - it's the jumping down that causes the injuries.) And neither are allowed on our bed, so that's not an issue at our house.

Every since Mazzy ruptured a disc in her neck I have tried to keep jumping at a bare minimum. I now have a ramp to the bed which she sometimes uses, but mostly now if we go to the bedroom she waits outside the door for me to pick her up.:cheer: Also now when she is on the couch with me & I get up I pick her up & set her on the floor. If she jumps unexpectantly, I tell her firmly NO JUMP & I set her down off of whatever she jumped on. I also keep all bedroom doors shut & keep chairs to dining table always pushed in. I also use the plastic carpet protectors turned upside down on some furniture. None of the dogs will jump on that.:D

Petey's Mom
08-02-2006, 02:56 PM
Whew...I thought I was the only one who hadn't mastered my dachsie's jumping habits. When Petey is calm, it's no problem, but when he's excited, having zoomies, or playing "git me" with the cat...all bets are off. He boings all over the place faster than I can catch him, with the worst culprit being the couch. He banks off it when chasing the kitty or zooming (often both happen at the same time).

My bed is WAY high, and he has jumped off it a couple of times (going after that damn cat again), but 99% of the time, he will stand at the edge and look at me if he wants or needs down.

He has NEVER gone near the stairs to the basement; he stands at the top and waits for whoever went down those scary steps into that hole in the ground.

So he jumps in moderation, but I'm trying to figure out how to make him stop without cutting out his whole play/chase career

Valentin will use the steps from the bed normally. When he is excited, forget it. Same with the sofa, normally I lift him up and down; but if they hear a dog bark outside, or a noise in the hallway, I have a nano-second to try to catch him first.

Heidi Ho Ho scares the life out of me. If I don't lift her down in time, she does a "dolphin back flip" off the sofa. So far she has not tried it from the bed. Will someone PLEASE tell this dog that she is handicapped???!!!!:pullhair: :pullhair: :pullhair: Our patio doors go right up to the ceiling. The "header" is at floor level and is about 7 inches high. When I let the others out on the porch, if I am not fast enough, Heidi PULLS herself up the header/door step, over the triple door tracks and JUMPS down onto the concrete slab. The "downed" one :eekdevil: is going to be the death of me !!!

Well so far Mud isn't quite big enough to jump up on most furniture but oh boy, that sure doesn't stop him from trying!! He runs up to anything taller than him and takes a flying leap only to fall completely backwards. Then he whines like he's frustrated and can't believe it didn't work! He's never made it on any of our furniture without help, so I don't know what makes him think he can do it.
Once he's big enough, I have a feeling it will be extremely hard to stop him but I will def. try my hardest and absolutely no jumping off the bed. Sometimes he'll be on the couch with us and bark to get help down. Hopefully I can encourage him to always do that!
He's the shortest dog we've ever owned and easily the "hoppiest"! He jumps straight up in the air, all four feet off the ground for any reason he can think of. That almost worries me more than jumping off the couch because he just throws himself around...

OK I said I don't try to stop them from jumping. I used to... I have a ramp in the garage. My bed frame and box spring is full size and the mattress is a single. So when we still had Ivy she did use the lower part most of the time. The boyz are to wild to control most of the time. Con does jump on all four feet most of the time. Zor is a jumping nut. Plus I am concerned about his weight going up. They love playing on the couch but we don't have legs on it so that there is less chance for them to get hurt. I think now that I checked the wrong box. Keep your fingers crossed that they don't hurt themselves.:crsfnger:

how high is too high? i have a low couch/futon, and my bed is just a boxspring/mattress combo, with no frame. i actually have 2 twin beds next to each other, one is just the mattress, so a dachsie could kinda climb up on that. i know they shouldn't jump really high but i like the idea of cuddling with them on the couch or bed :}

I would say anything over six inches would be too high - but the agility owners might be able to pin down that height better than I. Damage was done to my girl (many years ago) when she jumped off a sofa to the floor - about 3 feet? It's the shock of their front feet hitting the unyeilding surface that damages the disks. Even going down regular stairs can be dangerous and cause problems!

I have been unable to prevent Winnie from jumping. Keeping her on a leash all the time is not an option. Once she gets running in the house, anything goes. The one spot she is not allowed on is my bed - much to high; other than that, she gives me heart failure. She is sooooo quick that by the time I yell NO it is too late. At this point, I have put my faith in God to watch over her. I do my best and hopefully that will be enough.

I say NO JUMPING NO JUMPING DOWN DOWN DOWN and now we have my Mom and DH saying it too, so Scooter is getting the idea. Jumping is not good for the back... as we all know...

As it takes is one jump from the bed or sofa to injure a pupper's back.
I cried for days when Scooter got hurt... so I will do everything in my power including being a mean mean mommy (no big bed, no sofa, and NO ONE picks him up except for me -- because he has been known to try & push off & jump from peoples arms) to keep him safe and healthy for many years to come.

I use steps everywhere I can to prevent jumping.... I try very hard to prevent the doxies from jumping off the bed & their furniture. I have a ramp instead of steps for the back porch. My first doxie Tilly jumped up on and off the low couch in the family room...one day she tried to jump and ruptured a disk. Tilly crossed the bridge in 2005 from congestive heart failure, a major loss in my life...Tilly had neck and back surgery, her first was at age 2. According to our vet this is not uncommon for a doxie at age 2 to have neck or back problems. you can never be 100% with doxies jumping.

I say in moderation because we do all that is humanly possible to keep Otis from jumping. Oh my, he is a stubborn one! He gets past us from time to time. One day I had the cushions up and saw him trying to CLIMB the cushions! Our stairs are gaited so we have that covered. If I see him going toward the bed and not toward his ramp and I say, "wait" and "no jump" he will speed up to try to get there before I can pick him up (my bed is now on the ground, but I still don't want him to jump). Like I said, very stubborn. If I am sitting in the chair and I bend down to pick him up he will hop backward and away from me, like "I want to do it myself!" He is learning, but it is difficult. However, we all are trained to "watch him like a hawk!"

I started off not letting Kane jamp at all but I was running my head off after him trying to keep him from doing so. I to do not let him jump off any beds but there are those time when you just can't catch him. the furnature is a hit and miss too. If I can put him on the ground fist I will.

Blue, well she is so spoiled that she wont jump if she dosent have too!LOL ! Lady Bug, she will jump into a chair, and then jump onto the bed from the chair so it isnt so far, but if it is a far distance then I just say wait a minute, I will help you, and that is that.

One does, One does not. One has IVDD, the other does not. We use steps for the couch, ramps in and out of the house and have the IVDD guy pretty much trained to WAIT for someone to lift him on and off. Sometimes he gets ahead of himself and jumps off the bed though.

GingerSnap waits to be lifted off the bed, and she's usually pretty good about using her ramp for the couch. It's a high couch and she's not big enough to jump onto it yet, but off, well...sometimes she gets to racing with one of the cats and ends up flying off because she'd lose the race if she took the time to run to her ramp and use it!

If she didn't use her ramp, her hooGrampa would be offended...he built it special for her! (and she knows it, he gets extra-special licky-face cuddles from her when he's watching TV)

I said no but in honesty Kiki does jump off the bed if the cat goes scootin by. It is usually so fast I can't stop her. Cocoa is too chubby right now to do any hopping she is mad she has to exercise more!! She gives me the look and the tongue hanging out of the mouth on the walks like I wanna go home NOW! too funny....oh and Kiki learned the 4 foot plant last week at 3yrs old!! She just stopped midstride on our walk to the park!!! they are stubborn little things!!!

We attempt to allow moderate jumping. With 3 doxies, it's impossible to prevent each and every leap! They can jump on/off the couch (not very high), but are not allowed to take the stairs, up or down, when going outside. They are all so smart and have already realized that the ottoman is there for them to easily access the bed and they always use it! Very smart pups!

Well, it depends on which one it is. Laila, our girl, doesn't jump on anything. She can jump on the couch, but, it is easy to cry and have someone help her up. The bed is a difinite no-no either way- up or down. Darby, our male, on the otherhand is a different story. He is extremely slim, fit and athletic. I think he could jump 6 feet if necessary. So, trying to stop him would be almost impossible. Jenny, our corgi, can't jump on the bed. But, the couch is no problem. The old lady, Shiner, our heeler, barely makes it up on the couch. The bed is a definite no no anymore and she doesn't even try.

That is Rodney to the T. Rodney has stairs next to the couch, which he uses all the time, but if he feels "extra" spunky, he'll dive off the stairs or the couch. We have a house that is one level, so besides by "his" couch, there are no other stairs.

When he does his zoomies and flies over stuff, that is his own issue. :Sun2:

With 8 of them running around at one time its hard to make sure there is no jumping. They do jump off the chair and sofa once in awhile, they love to nap on the sofa and I tried to break from getting up there but it just didnt work. I do try to limit it tho', I worry about their little backs.

This came up in the poll section and I found it very interesting to read. I have to say that mine do jump in moderation. I have steps up to my bed as it is pretty high, but as for the couch and recliners they hop in and out of them all the time. I also have steps to my front deck but they are really short ones, and aren't the height of normal steps, they are more like stepping up a small curb or something.

When Logan was younger he used to scare the poop out of me. He would climb up to the back of hubbys chair and take flying leaps off it. One time I came into the front room from the office and he had climbed up daddys chair and was sniffing around on my antique buffet which is really tall (about 4' high) I started walking towards him and he saw me coming and just leapt. He flew out about 8 feet through the air and landed on all fours like a cat would. I thought I was going to have a stroke. I actually had the shakes for almost an hour after that. He finally outgrew his "big air" phase and the constant need to be flying through the air and I was so relieved. None of my others have been big jumpers, other than on and off the furniture, none of which it over two and a half feet high.

Their big thing lately is to hop up on the ottoman that I have next to the hot tub (our hot tub is in an addition attached to my bedroom) and stare at us while we are in it. This past summer when we had the heat turned way down and it was more swimming pool temps, Logan (yes my problem child) hopped up on the ottoman and then on to the side/edge of the hot tub. I got up to put him down and he tried to turn around and go back to the ottoman and fell in the hot tub. He just started swimming towards me and I picked him up and got out and rinsed him off since I didn't know if the chemicals from the hot tub would bother his skin or not and he hasn't done that since.

Dixie is not a jumper....per say. She "asks" to get up on the couch or chair wherever we are. Or we just extend our legs holding them together and she walks up the human ramp to our lap. I suppose it is because we have always picked her up to put her up there with us. On the other hand....if she is in our laps or on the bed (which is high) and hears someone come in or call her name....it's on....she turns into superman with flying leap straight out about 3 feet!!!:faint:
I'm not too afraid to let her jump because I have read over and over that bad backs are pretty much in their genes....if they aren't prone to a bad back...jumping is ok within moderation.

Now....her sister Zoey....that dog has springs for legs!!! She zips around the house leaping on and off the furniture like you wouldn't believe! There wouldn't be any way to stop her if you wanted to!!!

The funny part is....when she does it (especially after a bath)...D just looks at her like...."woman....are you mad:crazy:?"

Maybe because Dixie is heavier (not fat by any means) just thick like...and Zoey is as skinny as they come!

The hardest for me is when they are chasing each other.
Just today they were doing that in the yard and Abby hit her head on the brick fence. Freaked me out, but she is ok.

They jump on and off my low furniture, but I always try to discourage it.

No playing AT ALL allowed on the furniture or bed.

I crate abby at night as she pees at 3am, and if I have her on the bed she will jump off. After her potty, she sleeps in the bed with me until I get up.
She has jumped off it twice, and scared me, to do pee pees.

I have no stairs, but my porch has a two inch incline, that when they get chasing other she has tripped on.

Angel my mini chihuahua is also not allowed to jump off the bed.
Julie is the only one tall enough to get up there herself. I limit her though just because I want to be fair to all the dogs.

We have decided there will be no more dogs on the bed, once i have some funds to get them a cozy dog bed, that they can all fit it. Im tired of my husband fighting with me every night about them in the bed with us,lol

Neither of them are allowed to jump! We had the problem of Sammy jumping off the back of the couch. we fixed that by moving the living room to the other room so that the couches back are facing the wall. That fixed that. He used to jumped off the bed, but now sleeps in his kennel.
