My Danny - a LARGE black standard male has a beautiful coat BUT his underarm area is increasingly bothering him. It's red, bumpy and moist. Panalog helps a lot but how often can we apply it? The rash never seems to heal. He chews at it constantly and it's getting more irritated. (He loves it when we powder him like a baby.)
Help?

Georgette, where have you been? Nice to see you again! I think I have the answer about Danny's rash--it's probably atopic dermatitis, an allergic condition. Peaches has had it since she was two, and we struggle through every summer with it. How old is Danny? Does he have any other signs of allergy? When did it start? Is it worse or better at any particular time of year?
If this is what it is, it can't be cured, only controlled, and control is not always easy. (I don't mean to sound pessimistic, just realistic....) Peaches is on oral antibiotics and antihistamines with a little steroid kick all summer long. She has a very bad case, though. The "armpit" is often where this disorder first becomes noticeable because of the friction and moisture that occur there. It's important to get the itch under control, because the biting Danny is doing to relieve the itch is irritating the skin further and worsening the whole condition.
Your vet can help, but Danny probably needs some oral meds. The topicals may help a little (we tried them too), but they're generally not strong enough to do the job.
Good luck! Keep us posted!
