We have a year-old male mini dachshund. He is healthy, active and of normal weight, but we have noticed in the past months that we can see his backbone more easily than we used to be able to. We do the informal "backbone test" on him that we learned about here (running your finger down the backbone to see if the dog seems to feel any pain). He does not seem to be in any pain. His spine appears more rounded in the middle of his back than it used to, particularly when he is curled up or sitting down. When he stands, the rounded effect is not evident.

Does anyone have experience with this type of phenomenon? Is it cause for concern? An indicator of a future back problem? We are worried, and thought people here might have some information to help us. Thank you.

I do not know what the long term effects of this are but i DO know its a common conformation fault called Roach Back. I have known many dachsies that have it to one degree or another and have had no trouble. Im sure others on the board will be able to give you more information. If it really worries you a good talk with the vet couldnt hurt http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

My two year old mini has that, and he is on the thin side, so I never thought anything of it. Just so happens I am visiting the vet tonight, so I will ask and let you know.
