View Full Version : How Often do you Feed your Dachsie?
FOREVER A DAXIE
10-10-2003, 12:58 AM
My sister has a Medium sized dog and he gets feed only ONCE a day at dinner time. He has water throughout the day and she does leave him a bit of kibble. But his REAL meal is only at dinner.
We feed Charlie in the Morning (Kibble) then at Lunch he gets large Biscuit and 1-2 other treats. Then at Dinner he gets another bowl of Kibble.
How about your Dachsie???

morning and in the evening.
They get a 1/2 cup each time. They also get snacks during the day. Usually a doggie biscuit and then carrots. They love those.
They get a baby carrot each at 12:30 PM, have their meal at 3 PM and finally 2 small milk bones each at 7:30 PM. :)

Lynx and Dutch each get 1/2 a cup of kibble in the a.m. mixed with a small spoon of wet (currently Solid Gold/Bil-jac/Royal Canin mix, Nuera wet).
During the week, they also get a Kong stuffed with more kibble and a dab of low-fat, natural p-nut butter at 7a.m. and around 12p.m. They also get a pair of hollow rubber balls with a milkbone in them- I don't know who ends up winning those, though! They take quite a bit of work to stuff in, so I imagine it takes a good chunk of time for them to work them out.
This fills them up- we've put down more kibble at dinnertime, but they never touch it. And- they're both doing very well- Lynx is slightly over where we want him to be, but we're getting longer walks and should be able to control it that way.

2x a day. I've read on countless sites and books that it is best to feed 2x a day. Better for digestion.

Magic and Misty get fed twice a day, morning and evening. Magic gets 1/3 cup per feeding, Misty 1/4 cup per feeding. Mirri my pup at 4 months gets fed three times a day, morning, early afternoon, and evening. All are on kibble, with a treat or two later evening. Suppliments are given in the morning.
They all fed then the bowls taken up. None are continous feeders. Mirri will get a kong stuffed with a treat during the day because she is teething now. (Fun!!)

I feed twice a day jsut because it make them think they are getting more by eating twice. With our dachsunds and most other small breed dogs feeding just once per day poses no threat. In some of the large breeds there is a chance of the stomach turning on itself causing major health problems that require immedate emergency surgery but our little companions don't have than problem thank goodness.

Actually, Tom- Gastric Dilation and Volvulus (GDV) is a risk for doxies. They may be little, but they do have that deep, barrel chest that predisposes certain breeds to GDV. I remember seeing this in all the dachshund literature we read before getting out two, and I was a little confused, too- I thought it was a big dog thing.
On this particular Drs. Foster and Smith site: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?articleid=40, dachshunds are rated 21 of breeds with risk for GDV. Nowhere near as bad as those Great Danes- but worse that Rotties (of which I've known two with this problem- 1 died! :( ).
I believe I remember an episode of Emergency Vet where a lady had fed her small mixed breed people food for several days, and he got very bloated (another way to say afflicted with GDV) and passed away (he was a senior rescue??). But my memory is a little taxed as of late, and I've never personally known a dachshund or other little dog to have GDV.
Any way- it seems like the bigger risk for doxies would be gassy food, not neccesarily quantity. Just another reason why it's important to watch table scraps around any dog. It's also better to feed food that hasn't been shrunk when cooked- one of the reasons I like Bil-jac is that it doesn't expand at all- just breaks apart when wet. One meal a day should be okay for these guys- as long as it's healthy and not HUGE and is supplemented by healthy snacks through the day!
But don't ignore a swollen dachshund belly- they certainly are able to have GDV, and as Dutchman said- it's a big emergency that is often fatal if not caught before the blood supply to the intestines and stomach is cut off.

Ours are on 1/2 c twice a day and they don't eat all of their evening meal. They also get a carrot a day, and sometimes green beans with our dinner. They also get their potty treats, because they are such good babies.
Ours eat best when we are with them. They want to be with us so much that as much as they love their food, our attention will win out over food every time.
The vet tells us that they are both at perfectly healthy weights, and they never act hungry (I increased their food at 4 months, when I read up on the amounts, and Trenyce was looking thin.)

I guess we should be glad that we don't know more about it! What a terrible thing for a dog to go through. I hope none of us ever learn about it from first hand knowledge!

Graci gets 1/2 cup three times a day. Sometimes we give her a treat if she's good. Our golden retriever doesnt overeat so we leave his food out. but we keep it on a stool so he can get to it and Graci can't. as soon as she turns about 6 months old Im going to start feeding her twice a day. :D :flower:

A little over 1/4 cup Wellness twice a day for each with a teaspoon of canned. And probably 3 treats (Hill's Canine T/D small bites) for each.
I bought some canned pumpkin but haven't opened it yet...

We feed twice a day, with treats (dog treats only) when they have done good things (like coming when they are called, etc.). They also get veggies, and parsley for fresh breath. Henry and Kristy are on restricted diets, Lucy and Sarah get as much as they want. Lucy and Sarah don't overeat, Henry and Kristy do. Henry has what we call "an eating disorder' he will eat until he literally groans when he walks!
He can't figure out how I knew when he TORE into the dog food sack......he was hiding around the corner when I arrived, leaving one of the girls at the scene (of course). Then he walked around the corner very casually, but with an ENORMOUS bellly and groaning! After a long rest and a few trips outside he was fine........
I love to chow down myself!!:facelick: so I do feel sorry for them but we are very careful about their weight, much to Henry and Kristy's dismay!
I feed twice daily and they get a treat when we leave for errands.

Taffy gets fed twice a day. I wouldn't want to eat only once a day. She gets dry for one meal, wet for the other. Half a cup each meal. For potty rewards she gets CharlieBear cheese treats. I make cookies for her, and she usually gets one a day of those.
No people food.

Spike gets his food in his bowl once a day. However, we free feed Kaiba the english mastiff and the cats. My three year old is also the hero of the furpeople because she is a MAJOR food dropper, mostly deliberate. Spike raids everyones bowls and stalks the baby when she has food. He gets tons of exercise so he is not overweight in the least, but that is not from lack of trying!:D

a 1/4 cup twice a day. I still by the puppy bones because they are so small to limit treats. I have to watch my DH because he likes to sneak him snacks.

Olana gets breakfast at about 6am and dinner at about 5pm.
In the morning she is so cute. She wakes up, goes #1, eats breakfast, goes #2, and then always wants to go back and take another snooze.

I feed the same as Heide. Twice per day, 1/2 cup each meal. They like carrots for snacks and I will give a piece of kibble here and there throughout the day for treats.

The first two weeks I had Maisie I fed her three times a day. She needed to put on weight. ;) Now her weight is normal, and I feed her twice a day.
She gets Solid Gold Whee Bits (for little dogs) mixed with Neura Meat, Prozyme and once a day two spoonfuls of organic joghurt. She loves that. :D

We have been free feeding the boys so far. Once they get a bit older we will cut back so as not to let the get overweight. Since they are puppies though, we want to make sure their growing needs are met.

My two get 1/4C of Natural Balance? (the Dick Van Patten stuff) Reduced Calorie 2x a day with 1/2 can green beans for filler. And, of course, an occasional piece of veggie or fruit and a treat or two, very limited. And yes, dachsies can get GDV - I heard of one in CTDR's bunch that had to have surgery for it. It is VERY serious, and although it's probably not very common in dachsies, they CAN get it. My friend's weim had it; $2500 later, and much worry, he was okay. Now he has liver cancer; surgery tomorrow. He could use rays!! His name is Wagner, and he's a sweetheart!

We free feed premium kibbles until about 6 months of age; then 3 meals a day until 1 year. After a year old, we feed morning and early evening. Having mini dachsies for the past 32 years, it's what we have found to work well for them.

Everyone here is fed twice a day unless on a special feeding program to gain weight. My seniors are the only ones who eat three small meals a day. Our regular food program is Nutro Mini Dry, Nurto Ultra Wet, and Nutro Adult Wet. The wet is given to seniors who have few teeth or those post op then it is Nutro Oatmeal & Rice. We have had a few that need special diets due to medical conditions like UTI's.
When we just had Oscar and I was home with him during the summer, I fed him three times a day. Since we've gotten Louie, I've been at work during the day and I have only been feeding them twice. Its keeping Oscar's weight down as they tend to be beggers and inevitably get treats at night!

:hello: Buddy gets fed once in the morning a small bowl of dry food and water. He gets treats if he does tricks and water when he scratches at the cubbard door. He is so hyper but fun to have. Then he gets another bowl of food and water when my son gets home from school.
We sometimes wonder who minds better the doxie or my son...lol
The pic i am using for my avatar is the closest pic i could find to resmble Buddy for now. I need a cam so i can take some pics of him.

The big dogs get fed twice a day, though the only one that always eats his food is Sport. Tessa and Imaeia, well, they still protest the scheduled feedings by not eating! (Not sure how that helps them any, but I guess they think they're making a point)
GingerSnap eats 3-4 times a day, about 1/4-1/2 cup per feeding, depending on how hungry she is. As she's still growing I'm not too strict about the amount. She always eats in the morning, then at noon with the big dogs, but the afternoon feeding is more of a snack and she has been playing or sleeping through that one lately. Then she eats at night, again with the big dogs. (they get their dinner after we finish ours LOL)
GingerSnap and Sport never need coaxing to eat, but the big girls, oy...they don't like to eat when we want them to. Imaeia in particular has to be persuaded to eat or she'd starve to death. She went three days without eating when we first changed them from free-feeding to a schedule. It's been good for Sport and Tessa though, both have lost quite a bit of weight since we started scheduling three months ago, and they were both obese.

I was feeding Lexi 3 times a day but am starting to try to get away from the noon feeding. She usually gets 1/4 cup in morning of canned and 1/4 cup in evening of kibble. She was getting 1-8 cup at noon but at 9 months I don't think she needs it any more. she always gets treats all day as needed for being good. I am home most everyday so when I sit down to eat lunch she thinks she has to eat. Trying to give her only a treat or greenbeans instead of full meal. Does the amounts sound good for a mini doxie? Don't want her to get too much or not enough. Vet says she is a good weight ans looks nice.

Half a cup of kibble in the morning and the I use cooked venison in the afternoon as training treats. It also amounts to about half a cup. Venison is cooked without adding salt/ oil so is relatively fat-free (only natural occuring fatties). I either use small peices of venison as treats for obedience, or the entire half-cup at the end of a scent track. Just depends on the training I am doing that afternoon. I always try to make them "work" for their food.
we usually put a big bowl of food down in the morning and take it up at night

What...a poll-post I haven't replied to? And this one's been around for a few years? Where have I been, LOL:oops:
Mama usually wakes us up for her breakfast. That girl's got a timer on her, I swear:D and 5pm is their dinner. 1/4 c. dry Nutro N/C Lite. And a vitamin. :D
Mama's equipped with the timer, my boy's got a calendar in him...somehow he knows what days he's working-gets all excited and goes to where we keep the carry bag. Don't know how he does it. I can't even spell the word "work" around him. :faint:

When feeding kibble our two adults would only eat once a day. Now that they are eating raw they are feeding twice a day.
The puppy is feed twice a day -- sometimes three times a day if she hasn't gotten any type of treat during the day.

Wish Rocky would eat carrots, that was Barbaro's favorie treat.Rocky gets 1/4 cup dry food 6am(and not a minuet later week-end or not),and 1/4 cup dry food at 4pm.A few little bisquets here and there, and a couple times a week some chicken mixed in with dry food(when we have it for supper). He gets a treat for going out and doing his "jobbies".I do not make him roll over for treats anymore since he is senior citizen retired. He is thin, but no chances with his back at 14 years young.
