View Full Version : Do you give your Dachsie a Daily Massage?

FOREVER A DAXIE

In the book I bought prior to getting Charlie ~ The Complete Idiot's Guide to Dachshunds ~ it recommends a Daily Massage.

It helps you to know your Dachsie body very well. Therefore, you can tell when it is normal and when it isn't.

We don't do it daily but for sure twice a week!

Yeah, we don't do it on a regular basis, but we were taught how to do it in puppy class to get them to calm down. Regular grooming keeps us very well in touch with their bodies and I can catch changes- but my massage therapist mother can make jelly out of Lynx- he LOVES getting her massages! It's so cute. Dutch is too much of a squirmer for that!:raz:

I don't massage like human massages, but I do rub all the dogs at least every day, if not every other day. Usually, I'm looking for any things that don't belong on their fur or any possible "owwies". :D

called massage or not, but I rub them down atleast 2 times per week just so that I can feel their bodies and see if any thing different is there. I like to know that if something is wrong I find it quickly and can get them to the vet right away.
Other than that they get petted all the time. They are at me feet in the bathroom or at the computer.

I don't do the full massage thing daily, but we're always rubbing & petting them, rolling them around to check their coat and make sure there are no problems. That's how we found Lexie's little lump in her chest. It is a good way to stay in tune with their bodies.
Rooby LOVES her massages... I've been doing them since she was a puppy to relax her... they work especially well when she thinks it's playtime instead of bedtime. I start massaging her shoulders and she melts like butter. She doesn't always want to give it up; when I start she's sitting up and in no time her little head starts to droop, she starts drooling... then her front legs start to relax and she lays down... I massage her shoulders and back, then I do all the feeties... she's putty in my hands by then. :snoopy:

I love to massage all the pups, I feel it's important to touch each one of them since I've got 5 dogs in the house and want them all to know I love them. I like to massage Otto's head, and when I do Buddy's legs, he streaches soooo long! Dolly will start to do her little "oooohhhh" groan when I rub her shoulders. Gert will dig with her front paws if I stop too soon. Izzy just sighs a contented little sigh, happy to be near me.

We're always holding and petting and rubbing anyway, but once a week they each get a good grooming with a brush, and they've already had 3 good rubdowns after baths.

I like to rub the smooth hair backwards because it feels good to me! Trenyce has had reactions to her shots, so I'm always rubbing and gently massaging those sore spots to work the knots down (the vet said she's having little reactions). I love mauling Ruben's fuzzy baby fur, expecially since it's harder to find bugs in his hair. I missed the fleas, so now I'm more careful.

This weekend I massaged Trenyce's leg since she hurt it (we learned today it's a sprain). I also rub thier necks after our walks whenever I use the double leash. Ruben has been known to tug sister along behind him when she gets stubborn. :afraid:

I also rub Ruben's furry feet when it's nearing bedtime and he's not sleepy. Knocks him right out! :asleep:

I didn't vote since it varies with what is going on. Beside being an enjoyable experience for both you and your dog it is also an excellent way to discover if they have deveoped any lumps or other conditions that may need additional inspection.

It must have been three years ago tht I took an evening workshop on doggie massage. Tanner got to go to that event. All my boys think I have pretty good hands. Even Dexter who was very touch sensative when I first got him loves a good massage.

I've been trying to massage LC everyday. It's good for him and me, plus the pup class trainer suggested it.

Yep, pretty much every day, during our lap time in the evening. Nothing too formal, just a muscle relaxer that concentrates up and down the spine, but takes in the rest of the body as well - feet and ears especially (helps for them to be less sensitive during necessary routine care). I'm probably a bit paranoid about Mia's back, so for my own sanity I need to know there's no soreness or tenderness there.

They get brushed and massaged every day. I use a rubber palm brush that slips over my hand. It has little rubber teeth that strokes their fur and removes any loose hair.

Buck will lay on his back in front of me when he wants to be massaged - sometimes more than once a day. When I pet Oscar - he'll roll on his back to get massaged. They both love it!!

I check their feet - between their toes and look inside their ears too.

Taffy is always getting massaged.....I find it relaxing for me to rub her. I massage her feet, too. I just want to know this....when is it my turn?

Massage them?

Now . . . let's figure out how to have *them* do the Oriental back walk. :D

Without the "me love you long time" angle. :D

If I don't get right to it -
he lets me know that he means NOW

He'll just keep waiting until he gets that massage he wants!!

I don't really massage them, but I do give them all a rub down just to make sure there aren't any lumps or anything.

No massages, just occasionaly playful rubs. Esp. in the morning when she first wakes up. She loves it then.

I give all the rescue doxies a good rub down every day...I call this a massage to look for insects, injuries etc. Skittles my cart dog get a real through massage...could call it massage therapy to keep her muscles in good condition.

Massage is also a wonderful way to have special time alone with each dog. All this is done during grooming...sometimes in my lap or where ever it is convenient for ME>>> they sure do love the attention...your fur-baby will come looking for their special time every day...

I'm working on doing it daily, but sometimes I just forget. Mocha enjoys the grooming mitt I got her this past holiday.

Heidi gets a nightly massage because of her IVDD.

Valentin and Pogo get "full body rubs", every evening during our floor time (mom sits on the floor and gets "puppy piled").

I am actually a Certified Canine Massage Therapist so even though I give all my dogs a rubdown every night to make sure there are no changes on their bodies, I only give them a complete massage about once a month or so.

I do massage my 12 year old coonhound every night though, usually somewhere around 7 pm. If I am not down on the floor at 7 she is right there by my chair staring at me like "well come on get down here and massage me." It has been a wonderful help with keeping her limber and less stiff. She is at a point now where all she does is lay around and sleep. But she gets off the couch every night around 7 for her massage. lol

I give Ringo a massage every day - some days he gets more than one, because my mom will give him one too! But it's not a formal thing, I'll just be holding him and petting him, and I do it then. I make little circles up and down his spine, I read somewhere that you can tell if something is wrong with their spine this way. And I massage his head and ears, and his legs, even his tail! He loves it, and actually I do too, it's very relaxing ^-^
