When I spoke to our vet on the phone about having our 6 month old dachsie spayed he mentioned also having any remaining baby teeth removed at the same time. I was wondering if anyone else encountered this and if it is something that we should consider for Schnitzel.
Thanks for any info,

That seems to be a standard procedure. It's a good time to remove the teeth because the dog will already be sedated for the spaying, so it's easier to get the teeth then. With my last dog and again with Mickey, my vet told me the same thing for some stubborn baby teeth that didn't want to fall out. For both my guys however, the teeth did end up falling out by themselves.

Does you dachsie HAVE extra teeth? The ones he's referring to are usually the fangs. If they don't come out, they can crowd the other teeth & cause hygiene & infection problems.

I think it's nice that your vet is on top of things like this. Some of them spay or neuter the dog, THEN mention that the teeth should be removed: more anesthesia & more money.

According to our vet some baby teeth are stubborn and do not like to fall out on their own so she suggested taking them out at the time of spaying so there was only one time Becky Ann had to be put under. She also said if they had not fallen out by 6 months they were probably not going to fall out on their own. She had to remove 4 teeth, and it never seemed to bother Becky Ann.

Have them taken out!
My Maggie did not have any teeth removed when she was spayed and at 8 months she had to have several baby teeth removed because they were wedged into place and could not fall out. (Her gums were swollen because of pressure on the roots in her crowded gums.) The baby teeth were removed and Maggie was her happy self again by supper time, but it would have been better to avoid the second surgery (and second bill!)
(Penny had hers out when she was spayed and I am not sure that she ever even noticed!)
