Penny's eyes are blood shot. I called the vet and was told to try Visine eye drops tonight and tomorrow morning and if they're still blood shot bring her in tomorrow after school.
Anyone had this happen before? I know that I'm probably worrying more than neccessary, but poor Penny is my HEALTHY dog. I'm suddenly worrying that the blood shot eyes are a symptom of something worse......
I'll keep you posted, but in the meantime, have you had any experience with bloodshot dachsie eyes?

Perhaps it's a little allergy? Are you burning wood in the house (wood stove, or fireplace?) That could be one reason, could be a number of sensitivities. Penny will be fine http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

The Visine worked great - I could hardly believe how quickly the whites of Penny's eyes cleared up!
Our house is pretty much an allergy free zone due to my asthma and allergies, so there's no wood burning or anything. It's been really windy and the snow and sand is blowing like crazy up here, so perhaps that's what irritated Penny's eyes. Also, I suppose I am a little bit hyper sensitive to any problems right now. I know that guilt is pointless, but I missed so many of Maggie's symptoms!

I didn't know that it's ok to use Visine! Here I've been spending more for Veterinarian EyeWash!<IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm25.gif" border=0>
Heidi, what exactly were Maggie's symptoms initially? I remember the drooling and seizures, but what else?
How is Maggie doing now? Is she still stable and feeling better since you quit the meds?

My dachsie Cloud had blood shot eyes for several weeks and the vet told me the immune system was reacting to an allergin or an infection. It went on and on so I ended up taking her to a dog eye docter. He found her eye pressure barely readable and declared she was in jeopardy of going blind. She was put on steriods to help and that brought her around. But a few months later she developed skin lesions. And the red eyes came and went. Blood tests were done...everything. There was no certain diagnosis until she started spotting between seasons. More blood tests. Poor thing has a terribly infected uterus. We had it removed. Too bad because she is a wonderful bitch and only ever had two babies. Watch your dog closely for any other signs of illness. So if any of you see this go on for a long time, get with the specialists.
