Just a warning this is gross...My Oscar is so sick, I feel so guilty being at work. Monday he had runny poop and threw up his dinner, Tuesday he was fine, Wednesday very runny poop and threw up his dinner and couldn't even keep water down. When he threw up it was all food, hours after he had eaten, you could still see kibble bits. He has an appointment at the vet before they open tomorrow morning (extra charge for that of course), but if he's still very sick today I'll take him to the emergency hospital. Does this sound like anything? Do dogs get the flu? He was also sick like this 2 months ago but it only lasted for one day. I'm worried something is seriously wrong.

I hope he gets better real soon. It's really frightening to see your doggie sick isn't it. You feel so helpless. Chiefy got sick about 3 hours after a vaccination. Trembling violently and throwing up. It was so scary, I thought he was going to die. Turns out vet neglected to tell us he shouldn't have eaten after his shot. He was better the next day. Please keep us posted on how he's doing.

So sorry Oscar is unwell. There are so many potential causes of GI upset, and most of them are minor and easy to treat. Hoping that's the case with Oscar! Let us know.

Raaaaaaayyyyyyzzzzz from here!

Oh poor Oscar. Do let us know what the vet says, I was in exactly the same position last week and I know it's horrid. Lots and lots of dachsie rays across the pond

Has Oscar been eating things he shouldn't be? If the vet suggests an x-ray, go with it, IMO. Also, blood work if he suggests it.

Pluto had a major gastric upset during the summer. The vet put him on an antibiotic and w/i a day he was his old self. My vet always recommends rice and chopped beef while Pluto is getting over these upsets - I think he knows that good food is coming. I hope Oscar is well soon. Lanie

Rays coming at Oscar from me and my boys! Hope he feels better soon.

I have heard of dogs getting viruses that affect their digestive systems -hopefully he just needs a bit of time to recover. Someone I know was told by their vet to give the dog some pedialyte (for human little ones) to help avoid dehydration.

Thanks for all the get well wishes! Well, Oscar has checked ok at vet - thank goodness. They checked his poop and did blood work. I have meds to help settle his tummy. So, hopefully he'll just get better, he is acting normal now. Yesterday I made him chicken & rice, he loved it, picked out all the chicken before he ate the rice. Also I did give him some pedialyte. I wish I knew why he was so sick, he does not get any leftovers or junk, and never goes outside by himself, so I cant imagine it was something he ate. You feel so helpless when they get so sick like this.

I'm glad Oscar is feeling better. We will hope he doesn't have another repeat episode. Some dogs do however seem to be just prone to occasional stomach upsets. My sister once had a dog like that. It was a dachshund terrier mix and live to be 15.

Best wishes,

Tom and the boys (Frank and Tanner)

Hey, Oscar's Mom--good news! Very cute that Oscar picked all his chicken out of the mix before eating the rice--I'd say that's a good sign!

You know, even with humans, the docs often just have no clue as to what causes a GI disturbance. If you were to check out the patient charts in an emergency room for all the people who came in with a variety of GI problems, you'd see the word "gastritis" over and over again under "Diagnosis." "Gastritis" is just a catch-all term that means inflammation of the stomach. I wouldn't worry about it too much or drive yourself crazy trying to figure out what happened. If it became chronic, you'd have to be prepared with a plan of action, but even then, vets often just don't know what's at the root of the problem. Happily, though, most of these problems can be resolved with a bland diet, a Pepto-Bismol tablet, or a little anti-diarrheal medication.

Very happy to hear the boy is better!

One idea that came to me after Tessie's gastric upset (which sounded like Oscar's) that they were unable to diagnose. (It went away as suddenly as it appeared). You don't have any oaks with acorns lying around? I think that is what Tess ate. I found out from the long-time dachsie owners that acorns are very toxic to dachsies. Found the remains of an acorn in the backyard a few days after Tess got sick. Now we look for all nuts and remove them quickly. Glad to hear he is all better. Rena

I'm glad Oscar is ok! I've heard that dachsies have sensitive tummies. My Freddie has never had poop problems, but never say never! They're just like a child, always a worry!http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

Yay for Oscar!

I thought to be clever and put a little peanut butter in Wo's empty marrow bone this week.

The next morning he looked ill, slunk around and was generally pathetic. I was really late for work trying to decide if I should drag him to the "Room Of Doom", then took him outside and he had very severe runs.

All day at work I worried how he was, but he was ok when I got back. Lesson learned- No peanut butter for Wo!

Oscar is back to his little crazy self!
I haven't seen any acorns around, but thanks for the tip.
I so hate to leave him alone when he's sick, but people don't understand when your even late for work because he's sick.

OK - I guess I spoke a little to soon. Oscar threw up last night but it was all like foamy spit. Does that mean anything?

Shelbie

That's what Shelbie was doing the other week. Perhaps another trip to the V words is in order, is he eating and pretty perky still, could it just be his tummy's still a little sore?

~Jen~

My dacshies used to throw up the foamy stuff when their tummies were a lil too empty. I solved this problem by giving them some extra milkbones before bed. I would check with the vet. though just to make sure it isnt anything more serious. Hope ya feel better Mr. Oscar!!

Hi Oscar's Mom,

Rays for Oscar on their way.....

My mom had the same problem with one of her boxers. Only it kept cropping up quite frequently. After switching foods and trying several meds, he was diagnosed with IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease). Meds that were given every day seemed to do the trick. If he had a "flare-up", they just adjusted the meds.

I hope I didn't scare you, but just so you know if this happens to be the case, IBD is very treatable. Please keep us posted on how Oscar is doing. If you have any more questions about IBD, please e-mail me as I have been down that road before.

I just remembered this...I hate to admit it but...I've been a bad mom. We got some meds friday for Oscar to take for 7 days to help settle him tummy and I totally forgot about it yesterday. He was so not-sick I just forgot.
Strange thing about last night, I heard him tossing & turning all night in his bed, so around 4:00am I went and got him and then he throws up in our bed.
Thanks for all rays!

Never mind, he'll be better soon. The throwing up in bed thing really rings bells with me, we got through a few duvet covers the other week!! Remember the Steve Martin film, Parenthood when he says to the little girl "Do you want to throw up?" and she nods and then .... That was Bee!!
