View Full Version : Augie is in the hospital

Augie Dog

I just admitted Aug to the hospital. All of this has been going on for the past week, just don't know where to start.

duh, how about the begining.

Wednesday afternoon Aug started in with a BAD case of the runs. I switched over from Innova to chicken and rice to try to bind him up a bit, did not work.

Last night he was out 3 times during the night to poop, brown mud type. Last night in the kitchen he was sitting funny back legs were not in the usual Aug sitting position. This morning he was walking funny, weak, just not right. My wife came home around noon and I called to check in on Aug. She said something is wrong, he can hardly stand, can't walk.

I was on a trouble call close to 100 miles from home. Thank God a cop was not looking. I flew home, Shenn had to go back to work before I got home.

When I got home, no barking, silence. He could not get up. I got him out of his crate and stood him up. Shaking, he took a few steps. His back end is not right, legs don't work. But, his front legs are wobbly too. I took him to the hospital and they took him back. Nothing yet.

I do not know what to think. He eats stuff, did he get into something I don't know about. My wife and I were playing with him last night. Back legs were strong. He is strong! I can't figure out what is going on. I do not think it is a back problem, His leg just would not work, right. If it is a back problem, how am I going to take care of him? We both work full time jobs. Or maybe he ate something. A blockage? But then he would not go? I just don't know, I am an over protective Daddy, how can this happen?

That sounds EXACTLY like what Owen was like when he had Giardia. Have Augie tested for parasites, they're horrible, especially Giardia!! It took EVERYTHING out of Owen, I thought I was going to loose him. Where he picked it up, I have NO idea. Probably sluped some icky germy water out of the gutter on a walk, but as I understand it, Giardia can be picked up from tapwater. I'm guessing that Auggie is so weak because he's dehydrated from the runs. The vet will give him some fluids and track down the problem and I just know Auggie will be fine.

I know how scary it is waiting for an answer. Keep us up to date!!!!

sounds like it is hard to diagnose.

I really hope Augie feels better soon.

That's article is right on with Owen's case. They didn't diagnose it at first. He went into the vet, had TONS of tests, $300 later, they couldn't give me a real answer. They put him on a broad spectrum antibiotic and gave him subcutanious(sp?) fluids and sent him home. He never lost his appetite, but they were telling me to fast him to stop the Diarreah, so the stress of that gave him bloody stools. I had only had him a couple of months and worked so hard to put weight on him, he was so thin when rescue got him and I was charged with putting weight on him. He lost almost 2 lbs in a week, and it took me 3 months to get that weight on him.
It went away for about a week, then it came back with a vengance, and I rushed him to the Animal ER because he was having explosive bowel movements every couple of hours. He pooped in the car on the way, right on the front seat. That lucky sample was FILLED with Giardia Cysts and they diagnosed it right away. Put him on Flagyl or 20 days (it's a hearty parasite!) and he was better that night. Whew! Just writing about it brings it all back. I really feel for you, David, I know how awful it is when our babies are so sick!

David first off don't blame yourself we know you are good daddy. Dehydration can cause a lot of general muscle weakness. We will be checking in to see what you find out. Not knowing is always the hardest part.

One general tip with giardia for those who are ever forced to drink untreated water from a stream. It is heavy enough that it tends to sink to the bottom in clam or stagnant water. You are much more like to contract giardia from fast moving water.

Best wishes and rays

OK.. I'm sure you're all sick of me.. but.. Here's a little disclaimer... I'm not saying Little Auggie has Giardia, just that it sounds exactly like when Owen had it. I just hope they find whatever is causing the problem fast

David-
Sorry to hear the bad news. It is terrible when something like this crops up. I was a wreck when Mitzi got sick and I had only had her a week. She had coxsidia (sp) and let me tell you her poo was gross. We treated it and the vet gave her something to slow her intestinal track down. Luckily it worked right away. We're sending rays your way and we sincerely hope he is home soon.

I'm so sorry about Augie Dog! I do hope he'll be back to normal quickly!

As for what's causing the problem, with Maggie I learned that there seem to be HUNDREDS of causes for doggie diarrhea! Thankfully, most of them can be cured pretty quickly once they're diagnosed properly, so I'm expecting to read some good news very soon.

In the meantime, Augie Dog, Augie Daddy and Augie Mom will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear David and Augie-boy, we are sending you TONS of raaaayyyyz and hopes that you'll have a diagnosis soon, and then the treatment can begin!

I too feel certain that this is just some icky thing in Augie's gut. The muscle weakness is almost certainly coming from dehydration and general feeling ill. Based on Peaches's long history of terrifying diarrhea episodes, I can tell you that once they pump some fluids into your boy, he will feel better FAST! Then they can eradicate the bug, or whatever it is.

We're thinking of you here in Chicago and will check in often for updates.

No suggestions... Just happy thoughts and prayers going to you and Augie from me and Sadie and Abbie. I know its scary not to know what is wrong. I called my vet at one in the morning because Sadie just wasn't right. She hadn't been eating for a awhile and she wouldn't sleep in bed with me. (Strange for Sadie). Anyway... he met me at his office at 1:30 am. She had tonsillitis if you can believe it. I felt like an idiot but the vet assured me I did the right thing because some of the symptoms I described sounded like bloat. I know you didn't want to hear all of that, but happy thoughts go out to you. Please let us know how Augie is.

The switchboard at the hospital is closed for the night. They said that Aug is resting and that they are performing the test. No news is good news I guess.

It is very quiet in the house now. No sound of shreading paper, chewing or the yelling of NO or DOWN or MR. AUG, LEAVE THE *insert your object here* ALONE!

It odd to say this but, my feet are cold. You get used to having a sausage dog wrapped around your feet to keep them warm.

Will keep you all posted, thanks for the rays and prayers.

Oh no! Mr Augie is poorly! Sending stacks of dachsie rays over the pond and a big kiss on the nose. The Shelbster has had a runny tummy this week and is on antibiotics for it. It's so worrying isn't it and doesn't the day and night drag when they're in hospital - come home soon Augie

David,
Hope that today brings good news from the vet. Sorry about misspelling Augie's name yesterday. Tried to correct it when I saw it, but the server was not responding. Must be those thread grinches at work. At any rate the girls send giga rays to him today. They still want to vote for him for president! Rena and the girls
