They did IV and some antibiotics. Took samples too, nothing back from the lab. We visited today. As soon as I seen him he looked better. But, then I smelled it, blood. I am a hunter, I know the smell. I told my wife to start looking, we could not find anything, then I seen it on my sweater. Drainage, from he rectum. I wish they told me about this BEFORE I seen him.
I did not notice it yesterday, but it seems that all of the runs started something back there. Although no tests came back they are treating it as an intestinal infection.
Aug looked better because of the IV, but he is loosing weight. His butt is sore, he lifts his back legs to show me something is wrong.
There is a bench in the waiting area, I sat over it and held him in my lap for about 2 hours. Wife had to make me leave.
Sunday they are only open from 4-8, This is a "holiday" weekend (I work monday) If nothing comes back or I see a result on Monday night, we go to another hospital.
Thanks for the rayz. My boy needs them.
We got the house cleaned today though without interuption. Went to rotate the matress Dunno how but, left overs of uh....... a woman's thing uhh........ pad thing, well maybe more than one. Along with half eaten treats, peanut butter cookies, wraping paper and crewed pens. He's been busy. Vet said the pad things would not make him be in the shape he is in though.
More on Aug Sunday night.

David, what a tough day you've had. Doctors can be maddeningly blase about things--like blood loss--that make us crazy! It would have been nice if they had mentioned that to you. Try not to be too alarmed--Peaches has had rectal bleeding so many times that I'm actually USED to it, and when it happens now, my pulse doens't even quicken. Blood in the rectum or stools is real common after severe diarrhea. I'll bet you hated to go home without him, though, huh?
It's great that you can laugh about Augie's little "treasure chest" under your mattress! Those wieners--what DON'T they get into??? http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif You'll have to replace a treat or two so that he can find them when he gets home. (Oh, and David, in case you haven't noticed, we're mostly women on this board and we can take it: Just say it loud and say it proud..."Augie buried a Kotex in the mattress!" http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Keeping paws and fingers crossed here, and sending you a few more rayzzzzz, in case you run low....

Hi David,
Try not to get discouraged. While not an expert I know some lab test take a little while to grow cultures. The lab may be short staffed as well with the holiday weekend but doctors have a was to get test pushed through if they consider a case critical. I think the others are correct a little blood with severe diarrhea isn't that uncommon. It's amazing how a little blood can look like so much when it belongs to someone we love.
I bet Augie was as sad about staying as you were at leaving him. Take care the boys and I are sending rays.
Best wishes,
Tom and the boys (Frank and Tanner)

The girls and I were hoping for good news and that Augie might be headed home soon, but it is good that he is looking better. I once had a puppy (well age 6) with similar symptoms and all the vet found was a huge overabundance of E. coli in the intestine. So we will send giga tons of dachsie rays and pray for good news tomorrow!!! Rena and the girls. Tess says she weally wants Aug for president!

Glad to hear that Augie looked better. I know how much you wanted to bring him home with you as I miss my babies dearly when they are not home. I can't even sleep. Who can when the bed seems so empty??? Sadie, Abbie and I are sending our prayers to you and Augie until he is well enough to come home. Sadie and Abbie also say to give Augie some doggie kisses from them to make him feel better.

Lili and I are sooo sorry about your precious Augie and are sending special healing rays and dachsie kisses. You are some kind of Dachsie Dad to sit at the vet and hold him. That should speed the recovery. Keep us posted, Shirley and Lili

E-coli, where did your pup get it from?
I get him a different treat last week, a bully bone from petco!

I never knew for sure. The vet had no idea, but said it was totally out of control. Cleaned the whole back yard and decided it either came from the automatic dog water bowl that the birds had discovered and bathing and doing their business in (even though I washed it out daily) or that the elderly neighbor had given her some uncooked meat. I eliminated the outside water and the neighbor has gotten elderly enough that she doesn't got outside any more. She didn't like my little red head (but did like Stinker)so I will always wonder. I just hope Aug is better tomorrow. After the Salmonella scare, I got rid of pigs ears and anything else questionable. It just wasn't worth taking chances. Rena

Hi David:
Must apologize for not posting here, about Augie. Just caught up with this unsettling news.
I hope you have something positive and encouraging from the vets before the weekend is over.
I suspect the waiting is the worst part. We are all waiting with you and sending hugs to Augie for a speedy recovery.

Don't know anything this morning. Going there at 4PM to be with him. He will need a new blanket and a fresh toy.
If there is no improvement by Monday night, we will be going to a new vet. Maybe I am jumping the gun here, all of this did not happen overnight.
Tonight will be the third night, can't think right. I may have to postpone a major test I have to take next monday, can't study.
Look for an update this evening.

David, hang in there! Unfortunately, this happened just as the weekend was beginning--hard to get any labs to run tests over weekends. Have they gotten the diarrhea stopped? I'm hoping they gave him a drug to stop intestinal contractions, so that there's absolutely no movement in there and the gut is able to rest. Is he passing anything from the colon? Are they giving him fluids and nutrients via IV?
Is this your regular vet? If so, I think I'd speak to him/her tomorrow, get a full condition report on Aug, ask what their plan of action is, find out when you can expect test results. If you're dissatisfied with the answers, THEN get a second opinion. Otherwise, the new vet will have to start from scratch, which will just mean...more time...
Be sure to give Aug big kisses from all his pals here on the board when you see him!
