Well, I think we may have figured out how to get Bugsy used to getting his nails done. They are too long so my plan is to work on them every day until they're short and he's totally cool with the whole escapade. I think we'll always need 2 people, though.
So here's what we're doing for now. One person holds him in the normal, under the arm, position. I work the clippers. If he seems particulary wary of what he knows is coming, I do some pad-hair clipping first because he doesn't mind this. Then I work on his back feet. I like to hold them together so he doesn't get purchase on any surface to push away. I hold his feet facing back so the pads are 'looking' up. Then I clip the nails. And voila! Not too much fussing and I managed to do both feet the last few sessions.
I've tried the same with the front feet (pads facing up) but it's not as easy. He seems to get more wiggly if he can see the clippers. But I will keep pluggin' away at it.
But the funniest thing is that he appears to hate the whole business but after each nail I clip, he wags his tail! Maybe, because at one time I was using treats trying to get him to like it. AND! When we're all done, he jumps around and wants to kiss us! What a pooch.
