I got to the hospital, they were about to call me. They said I could take Augie home!

Ok, here's the info, I hope that this helps someone else.

I was something he ate. It caused a bacterial infection in his intestines that gave him severe diareha. So bad that he was suffering from severe dehydration. The blood from his rectum was from going constantly and licking.

He is on Metron 250mg per day. He was on IV fluids. This morning he started eating again and has a soft but solid poop. Test came back negitive on parasites. So, home he comes.

He will be on Meton for the next week and a bland diet, they gave me the food. It looks great but, only vets can get it.

Anyone see this before?

He has lost a lot of weight in the past week. We can fix that

I have never see a dog get this sick! He could not get up three days ago, I though I might loose him. I guess after the second day of the runs I should have taken him in. I thought that if I tried to change his diet to chicken and rice (bland) that it would fix him up. Wrong. I wish he could talk sometimes.

Anyhow! Thank you all for your kind posts and PM's , Rayz and most of all Prayers! It helped a lot. The whole family was a basket case, they know how much this pup means.

Thank you again.

David and Aug:

GREAT news; thanks for letting us know. It's a good education, too, regarding when to take your dog to the vet. I wouldn't have known dehydration could cause such severe symptoms!

Kisses to Augie,

Great news Augie Dog and Augie Daddy! And a great photo, too! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Maggie & Penny both LOVE the Hill's i/d - (Maggie was on it off and on all fall and early winter while we tried to sort her problem out, and Penny had a couple weeks of it after her surgery last spring.)
I don't believe you'll have any trouble coaxing Augie to eat his supper! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/facelick.gif

It sounds like Augie's on the same regime of food and medicine Maggie was on in November when we were hoping that she had some type of infection in her digestive tract. The vet assured me this treatment works 99.9% of the time. Mags was that .1 % so Augie should be good to go! I'm certain you'll see a speedy recovery.

I'm so glad that you'll all sleep under the same roof tonight.

Happy dreams!

So glad to hear that Augie is home and on the road to recovery. My cat is on a prescription diet that you can only get from the vet. It's expensive and a little trouble going to get it at the vet, but aren't they worth it. Sadie and Abbie are all wags knowing that Augie is okay!!

Augie's Dad: Don't start beating yourself up because you didn't recognize a serious problem from the very first minute. You didn't because it WASN'T a serious problem until the symptoms got worse. Diarrhea can have so many causes that you can only drive yourself crazy worrying from the first minute. Pat yourself on the back: when the problem got recognizable as a serious problem, you dealt with it. You can't do any better than that unless you're clairvoyant.

When your dog gets diarrhea from eating every bit of garbage he can scarf up (it's in the Breed Description for a Dachshund, isn't it???), the best thing to do is to withhold food for 24 hrs, but let him have all the water he wants as long as he doesn't guzzle too much & start vomiting it. Then you just ration it to 1/4 cup every 20 min or so.

Vomiting (food & misc) & diarrhea is the only way the body can get rid of the bad stuff in the stomach & intestines, a natural defense mechanism. If something bad is in there, the faster it gets out, the better. So don't rush to give the anti-vomit, anti-diarrhea meds right away.

First, the diarrhea will strip off the mucous lining of the intestine (you may see stringy or globby mucous in the stool). Then, with that protective coating gone, if the diarrhea continues, the intestine starts seeping blood. This is not a major disaster, it's just the body trying to protect itself.

If you stop feeding, you are just preventing the intestine from having to try to make more protective materials to coat itself. If you stop feeding, & the dog's biggest problem is that he's STARVING TO DEATH, he probably doesn't have a serious problem.

THEN, after the first 24 hrs, try small amounts of the chicken/rice, etc.

Worst-case scenario is usually a blockage, which is relatively rare, considering the amount of absolute garbage that dogs consume if given the opportunity. The signs of a blockage: everything that goes down comes back up, AND there is a WATERY or very thin diarrhea with it. If there is only one or the other, the chances are excellent that it isn't a blockage.

Many years ago, a dachsie owner explained to me that "dachshund" means "garbage-hound". It works for me!

Alright Aug!!! Happy to hear that he is on the way to being all better. Tess says ID is not that bad... she only had to eat it for 2 weeks and then it was back to the low cal stuff (all that for eating an acorn). Whatever works is worth it. More rayz coming Augie's way. Rena and the girls.

Well, that photo of Augie sure made my day! I'm so happy that you're all back together again and that Augie is recovering from his case of garbage-gut! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/sick.gif

Peaches has also been on I/D (Hills must make a fortune on dachsies!)--I thought it was vile, but she loved it.

David, don't you dare be hard on yourself! We all assume that a little diarrhea just means they snarfed up an old French fry, or gobbled too much rawhide, or had a little stress--and usually that's all it is, and it goes away. The first time Peaches had severe rectal bleeding, it happened at 11 PM on a Saturday night after a day of just "normal" diarrhea. Who could ever have imagined it would progress to that?

Just be glad Aug is on the mend--I know WE all are!!!! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

Hi David,

Great news that Augie is on the mend. Don't start second guessing yourself it doesn't help change anything. You did what you thought was best and didn't sound bad to many here. Welcome Augie home tell him in a week or so you will give him the goodies he likes.

Best Wishes,

Tom and the boys (Frank and Tanner)

I'm so happy that Augie is ok and home!
Oscar has been on the Hills W/D before, I think the I/D is like an anti-diarrhea food. I agree with Pamela, it is kind of gross food but what ever helps them get over a problem is the thing to do.
Dont beat your self up over not taking him into the vets sooner! We watch these guys every second possible but they can still manage to get into things.
Take Care, Debbie and Oscar

David,

I'm so glad to hear that Aug is home with you now! And I'm thrilled to hear that he's feeling better. They can certainly scare us, can't they? I'm sure after a few days, he'll be back to his old Augie self.

Take Care! And give his Augster a kiss from me!

So glad to hear good news! Lots of dachsie rays coming from our way (although I think they may smell like frito feet). Give Aug a hug from all of us and keep us all posted on his recovery, please. I'm sure your time spent at the vets with him and your love really helped him to recover faster.

Good old Augie! Hill's ID eh? Thought that rang a bell, have just scrambled in our kitchen bin to see what our Vet gave us for Shelbie's upset tummy....yup, you guessed it. Hey, Augie, we're eating the same stuff at the moment, do you pretend you don't like it too? Mummy shouted a little bit at me today just cos I tried to pick up a chicken bone from the pavement on our walk - tut, anyone would think it made me poorly or something!

Aug is getting back to his old self again. Whew, what a week!

I know he is getting back to himself again because he is up to no good. In fact, he was on my lap while I was trying to see some of the thoughtful replies that you have been typing (that is getting hard to do cuz he is not a puppy anymore but, I am making an attempt) Well, he has always has had a problem with me spending so much time on the PC. Guess, what? I can no longer keep him on my lap. Not that he is too big (he is) But, he now knows that if he puts his nose by the green lights on the keyboard, the PC screen shuts off making Daddy stop.

This is a problem.

The outlet switch is now off the floor too. It is only a matter of time before he figures out that stepping on the black switch not only makes the screen turn off but, the whole PC.

Doxies are smarter than some people I know.

Ain't it the truth! You know your sick dachsie is on the road to health when he gets up to his usual mischief! Go, Aug!! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/bounce.gif

I must say, David, that I'm impressed with Augie's cleverness in finding ways to drive you crazy! Turning off the computer??? That is one smart doggy!

Whew! Now that the big scare is over, please tell Augie to _stay away from the electricity_!
He's not just smart he is one big risk taker.
Love the photo and the good news,

I am so glad that Augie is home. I was going crazy, cuz ever since Sunday, I've been unable to get on the internet to check on Aug. I am now at the college, and was finally able to see. I am so glad that it's good news!

Now I see why Kevin calls Otis a "scavenger buzzard." Just like Mikey, these dogs will eat anything. They just don't realize what a scare they give us!!

I just LOVE the picture and am glad to hear Augie is up to his old tricks, and keeping daddy's feet warm!

David! I feel like a big jerk! I don't get to spend much time reading the board like before so I was in the dark about Augie. I had to go back and read everything. What a cutie! I'm glad he is better. Dachshies will eat anything won't they?!
