Shelbie

Well, went to the vets again this afternoon because the tummy ache has come back with a vengence and Shelbie's got to go in tomorrow for an X-ray and a scan. They gave her a blood test while I was there and she's dehydrated and her protein is high/low? (one of the two - they show you all these charts and you go "oh yes"<IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm13.gif" border=0> She's on some sort of salts in her water bowl and some stuff that looks like Milk of Magnesia which I'll have to use a syringe thing later to get into her mouth - wish me luck, the vet made it look so easy! They don't know what it is but think it may be the thing she had in October never went away. The dreaded word pancreatitis was used again. I don't know whether to be really worried or not. Her tummy's so sore when I picked her up to go over a huge puddle on the way there she yelped. She's running around now like she's fine. Anyway, if you could spare a few more rays we're dropping her off tomorrow morning<IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm36.gif" border=0>

Oh poor Dame Shelby! Wotan has been scribbling little get well notes in the wet snow outside and hopes the tummers gets better soon. We also had our bout with the nasties (bactirial infection) and it took us at least a week and a half to get back to our full oneriness...<IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm7.gif" border=0>

Hope the best scenario is the reality here. One hundred black and tan smoothie rays coming too!

Hi guys, thanks as always for all the rays and good wishes. So, the latest is she's back home and I'm armed with bland food like I/D, two lots of syrup stuff, antibiotics, a list of instructions about when to give what and, are you ready for this?,a pair of rubber gloves a glass jar and a request from the vet made with a totally straight face for a mid stream urine sample by Friday<IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm32.gif" border=0> Any suggestions how the heck I get that would be welcome!!! Its not pancreatitis anyway. They're now thinking its either she's just been very unlucky or her liver is quite small so they are looking into the possibility that its a shunt in the liver which is quite rare...anyway, back on Friday for a couple more tests but we're resting quietly on the sofa at the moment waving a weak paw and blowing kisses to all her friends<IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm20.gif" border=0>

Poor Shelbie http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/frown.gif I hope she gets to feeling better soon!! I dont know if you read the threads or not but Mrs. F's Maggie has been diagnosed with a liver shunt. You might check into some of those posts and see if that fits the description of Shelbies illness. Sending Mega HUGE Dachsie http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/rayz.gifhttp://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/rayz.gif!!! Feel better soon Shebie!

Forgot to post this Liver problems are a common thing in Dachshunds I found that out from a old breeder years ago in not so well bred mini's it shows up more often since no one watchs what they are doing some older Standards get problems with age like 10 to 12 years.Kaye

A client once told me about the "pee-collector" she made to collect from her dachsie:

She taped a clean mayo jar lid to the end of a wooden yardstick, put the dog on a leash & followed her around.

"Mid-stream" (to those of you who haven't had the pleasure of this job) means let her pass some urine, THEN catch a sample (less contamination).

I once saw a vet cartoon about a farmer standing in a creek with his cow, a jar in his hand. He's telling his wife (on shore) that the vet told him to get a "mid-stream" urine sample. He had a VERY disgusted look on his face!

Poor little Shelbie, we were really hoping that she'd be feeling as good as new by now. I'm sorry.

Maggie says, "Don't worry Shelbie, if it is a liver shunt, they can make you feel really good with antibiotics and special food. You'll get lots of extra attention and snuggles, too. The bad news is your mum won't ever share her food with you again."

Heidi says I'm still hoping that Shelbie's problems are a little less serious than a liver shunt. Also, I've sent you an email with a bit more info about Maggie's symptoms and treatment.

Good Luck!

Hey! Pkmiddler's suggestion of collecting the urine in a BENT tin pie pan first sounds brillant. Then just pour into the jar. I like that advice!http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Also, that is interesting about not-so-well bred Mini's having a liver shunt. Something to think about.

Shelbie's Mum, I hope your little one will be fine. Keeping fingers and paws crossed!http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Dear Shelbie,

Mom has used the bent pie pan on me. She says it worked perfectly, but she felt a right idiot, duck-walking around behind me as I searched for My Perfect Spot before letting loose. Pee nice for YOUR mommy, now!

Farfel and I send love and kisses and hope that your liver is just fine and that you're feeling better soon!

Thank you as always everyone for your kind words and advice. Bent Pie Pan eh, well, I'll give it a try!! She's on antibiotics, cimetidine syrup and antepsin suspension and the low cal food. Seems a little down and wants lots of cuddles but loves the suspension stuff which smells of strawberries and so far I'm managing to pretend tastes really nice.<IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm6.gif" border=0> Hasn't had a poo yet to my knowledge since Monday which is slightly worrying but maybe that's the drugs. Anyway, will keep you informed - nearly time for the strawberry stuff yum, yum!

Shelbie! Maybe the sound of running water would get you to go! Have your mum walk you around the Thames a bit (taxi ride there, of course). Hope you poop soon. Hey! Now's the time to find that neat spot on the carpet- Mum would be soooo grateful that you can "go" she wouldn't be mad (well, hardly...)

Just to keep you informed ..well she went for a blood test on Friday where they take some blood, feed her and then take some more to see what's in it. Get the results back on Tuesday. In the meantime, she seems a little quiet but on the whole OK. The little "bathroom" problem has sorted itself out apart from last night when it was pouring down with rain but I think that was because she didn't want to get her paws wet! Thanks again everyone for helping us get through this,
much love

Hey Shelbie and Mum,
We're so glad to hear that Shelbie's holding her own. Good girl Shelbie - hang tough!

I never should have mentioned Shelbie's yummy tasting liquid medicine to Maggie, you should see the look I get from her now each time I put that little bad tasting uncoated pill on the back of her little tongue....... http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/disgust.gif
