View Full Version : NDR, but Wizard of Claws being sued
Today's Sun-Sentinel newspaper in South Florida had an article (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/southflorida/sfl-spuppy12dec12,0,6087160.story?coll=sfla-home-headlines) about a lawsuit filed against Wizard of Claws, a local pet store some of you may be familiar with because of its past practices. There will be a demonstration in front of the store tomorrow (Sat., Dec. 13).

My memory is that they were the original "teacup" dachshund brokers too. Grrrrrr..
This other teacup seller (http://www.teacupspuppies.com/) calls itself a "boutique.'' They try so hard to appear classy. They're located here in South Florida, too, and getting major dollars for these ill-bred dogs.

that is is really scary. Unfortunately people DO want these dogs, the smaller the better, less cost etc, but what a Genetic NIGHTMARE! :crying: :crying:

That's great! I only hope someone can actually shut them down one day. There are many of these places- but this one is NOTORIOUS for their awful marketing of over-priced runts. This stuff has got to stop sometime. If you visit that site... good luck. I couldn't sleep for a week after I first heard about them- I was that mad! Those testimonials are the most sickening things I've ever heard.
You'd have to be pretty ignorant to buy a $200 BYB puppy (or $25 mutt) for $2000 (and still think you're getting a deal) from such obviously disgusting people! If you want a pocket pet- get a hamster. Better yet- get a pet rock. Then hit yourself- repeatedly- in the head with it.

ignorance is bliss....:sarcastic
Honestly though, unless people research breeds, what do they know? All they know is look at this tiny sweet looking puppy and it ain't gonna get big either....
then they take it home, feed it crappy food (again what do they know..all they see is Kibbles n' bits) and from the marketing, yea it does look good. Etc etc etc...

We have a place just up the street from us called "Lucky Pets" who are advertising with a HUGE street sign "Puppys - $175". The place is right next to a vets office - and the vets office has a big sign in their window warning people not to buy from Lucky Pets and a petition to shut them down.
GRRRRRRRRR.....When will people learn! The cruelty brokers, they should all be shot and they have no heart or humanity, but the ignorant fools who fund these practices by buying these pups...grr...... Oh, we all know the excuses "but I'm rescuing this poor, sweet little thing". It is pure and simple ignorance.
Re-reading that article about Wizard of Claws, it occurs to me that the plaintiffs ought to think about their own role in all this.
One person states that they usually go to animal control or shelters for pets, but they wanted a Papillon "and they are not easy to come by.''
Well, I just did a quick Google search for "Papillon Club of America'' -- and there is one. I'm sure I could do a little research, apply my own standards, and come up with reputable breeders in a short time.
The problem is, people want what they want RIGHT NOW!
Why can't others see what I see? Wizard of Claws admits they have sold 3800 puppies the past 2 years. With that volume, I'm sure they do all the health tests and have the pups' best at heart, right?. RIIIIGHT! Pfft.

people KNOW that their are clubs, organizations for each breed. I didn't...(dont' shoot now...:D ) when I got Chief. After I got him, is when I decided to seek out more information. I know @ss backwards, but live and learn.

Of course, you would hope most reasonable people do some sort of research before they start out (I know, but I can be an optimist can't I???).
You wouldn't buy a car without finding out what the reviews were, you wouldn't adopt a child without understanding the medical background...so why do people buy a dog without understanding the breed or where the dog comes from??
Chris and I had done all sorts of research on dogs and were narrowing down our choices, when Otto came along as a rescue. Now, the irony is, dachsies weren't on our list of breeds we were considering. After having these two monsters however, we can't imagine living our lives WITHOUT a dachsie.
They say ignorance is bliss...I say that there is a time to deal with ignorance. (Okay, I have limited tolerance for stupid people).
Hurumph.

so let me ask you .did you know about dachsies before Otto wove his way into your life?
We were looking for a dog from a rescue, and honestly, I grew up with standard poodles, and as we live in a NYC apartment, a bigger type dog wouldn't fit our needs. We were out to get a small one. We had seen other dogs, been to other homes who were giving up their dogs and for one reason or another they weren't a "match".
We saw Chief who was housed in a wire cage and hubby put his finger between the bars and Chief did his "act" of licking his finger and that did it! :) I think lots of people wind up with dogs just like that, not that it's the best way to, it is not.
Would like to see the guilty parties hang by their thumbs. Hopefully the lawsuit will put them out of business.
I thought Paws&Claws was a specialty type place all teacup pets, poor babies, so tragic. Unfortunately supply and demand.
Sun-Sentinel had a story today on the demonstration (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/southflorida/sfl-cdogdemo14dec14,0,1974475.story?coll=sfla-home-headlines) at Wizard of Claws. Owner confronted demonstrators and said, "We don't buy from puppy mills.''
Yeah, right. 3800 dogs sold in 2 years, and I'm sure he has the highest ethical standards.

After reading this post, I decided to check out their website. Well it seems that they had a "live" chat so I decided to act like I wanted to buy a puppy and started asking a lot of questions. At first the person on live chat was very nice, but as soon as I started asking about puppy mills etc they got very defensive. At first they told me that they used 4 local breeders. But when I said that I wanted to check out the breeder personally, they said and I quote " Oh all our dachshunds come from a breeder in Georgia, are you going to go there" When I said that I would and that I wanted the name and address of the breeder, it took them approximately 5 minutes to respond back. Dead silence on the chat line.... They came back and said that they really couldn't remember their name or address but they thought it was something like Aretha Godfrey and that they were about an hour outside of Atlanta.
I then proceeded to tell them what my feelings were with regards to their selling practices. I only did it so that I could give them a piece of my mind. If anyone lives in Georgia it would be interesting to know if there really is a doxie breeder by this name.

Four local breeders, huh? Well, the owner of WOC said they sold 3800 puppies in the past 2 years. I wonder if four breeders pumped out that many puppies. If that were true, what would that be other than a puppy mill?
Did a brief Google search for "Aretha Godfrey dachshund'' and came up with nothing.

Maybe we should contact groups for the other breeds they market and collectively hit this Live Chat and ask them the hard questions, over and over and over!
Heh heh heh (that is an evil laugh)

Loren - to answer your question: no, we hadn't considered dachsies at all until Otto showed up at the office. We were looking at bichons (turns out they can't be left alone at all without becoming canine destructo units) and a few other "smallish" dogs...then whamo - I fell in love with this little dachsie. I spent the entire day sitting in my office, not working, researching dachsies, and realized that this was the perfect dog for us. I wasn't counting on the allergies mind you..but by the time they showed up, we were already smitten.
cheers
