we are finally going to start Jasmine's heartworm treatment next week, if all goes well at the appointment and she has no other illnesses, they will keep her and begin the process. she vomited twice yesterday, and has began to cough a little.......i read somewhere that this could be from the heartworms, so i am a bit concerned. the vet recommended that we wait until now, so if she is in worse shape now i am going to be very upset with him. she generally seems healthy, when we first got her, she was way too ill to go through with the treatment.
i've read every page on here and lots of other places about the treatment, and to say i'm apprehensive is an understatement.........she is approximately two years old, and we have had her probably close to 8 months or so now; she's my baby girl, ya know, and it's just a bit scary to think that i will leave her at the vet, and maybe she'll come home and maybe she won't. i am trying to remain positive and not to think about what could happen, yet feel like i should be prepared for the worst. i think the hardest part will be that first nite, they have assured me that if she survives the first treatment, her chances of survival dramatically increase. it just gonna be strange to not have her here. if i want to pay A LOT more, i can have her stay at the vet the entire time, but not so sure i can justify that. i have already rearranged my schedule, so that she will always have someone with her during the entire process; just in case something does go wrong, she can be taken in if necessary. anyway, i am probably rambling, if anyone has any info about the coughing and if it could be related to the illness, i would appreciate the information. i'll post how things go.............shay

I hope Jasmine gets better. Timber goes for heartworm testing next month to make sure he doesn't have it, I really hope he doesn't. Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi Shay,

I don't have any information, but I'm sure with all the HW experience on the board you'll get it soon.

I just wanted to wish Jasmine a speedy recovery and send some healing RAYZ.

Let us know how it goes,

Mark

Betty also had a cough when she started the treatment. The vet said that it was either a cold or it was the effects of the hw. He wasn't too concerned about it. She has now stopped coughing.

A few things that I've learned...

Talk to your vet about giving her a baby aspirin every day. My vet reccomended it and so have others. It is supposed to thin the blood and prevent heart problems.

Based on the experience on the board and Rena's friend who has a lot of experience, most problems happen around Day 7.

Have you given thought to how you are going to contain her after the treatment?

Which treatment is Jazzy going to have? The oral medicine first or the injections first?

I totally undestand your concern and apprehension. I will be sending Rays to you and Jazzy. I think that the treatment was harder on me than on Betty.

hi, just wanted to update everyone, we decided to postpone the treatment until after the holidays.....the vet suggested with all we have happening, it would be best to wait til the first week of january, as things will be a lot less chaotic and much more quiet for her recovery time. i know some of you may see this as selfish, and i agree it is a little, but if she doesn't make it throught the treatment, it's just not what i can deal with this close to christmas. not that i expect that outcome, i have been assured she is in good health and barring any unforseen complications, she should do well, she is young and has no other problems that they could find. thanks for all the support and we will keep everyone posted on how it goes. not sure of the exact date, but definitely in the first week or so of January, as soon as the vet opens after the holiday, we will be at the first available appointment!!!! shay
