View Full Version : Rayz Needed

My poor Mini needs any Rayz that anyone can spare!
Yesterday, she was very 'lazy' most of the day, and I didn't think too much of it, at first. Then last night she tried to jump onto the couch, and she couldn't do it! When I went to lift her up, she yelped:( , so I sat on the floor with her. She is able to walk fine, but I feel she has a problem of some sort.
I have her crated at the moment (which she doesn't like:( ) and I will get her into the vet this afternoon. I have to go to a funeral this morning, so i will leave her crated.
I can't believe that this is happening again, as we have been so careful since she ruptured a disc last year. We have a guard at the bottom of the stairs, and a ramp over the step to outside. The only thing we allow her to do, which I know we shouldn't, is jump on and off the lounge, which is not very high. She has been on Ester C supplements for over a year now.
I am really hoping that I am overreacting, but I would rather be safe than sorry.
I'll let you know what the vet says.

don't beat yourself up about the jumping. It is thought to be genetics so if it was going to happen, it would regardless. Hoping a little TLC will help the "outchies" go away.

Have you done accupuncture or any other supplements?

sorry to hear about this, Pauline! NOT possible to keep them from jumping, I have decided... in the absence of furniture, they will just jump in the air & flip around...:bounce: Will hope for an uneventful recovery for Mini.

We are just back from the vet, and we have bad and good news.

The bad news is that Mini has Calcification in the Disc again.
The good news is that we have caught it early, and the prognosis for recovery is very good. She was given a shot of Prednisilone and she will be on the tablets for the next week. She is also on total crate rest to prevent further injury.
She has to go back to the vet on Saturday, and we will reassess the situation.

Thanks for all the Rayz so far!

Pauline, I'm sorry I'm late on this. Poor little Mini, but I'm sure the injection of Pred will help a lot. Probably make her feel good and not want to stay in her crate, but Mom knows best.

Sending prayers and many rayz :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: for her to feel better and get back to her old self very soon.

this thread Pauline. I am so sorry.
I am glad that you caught it early and that the prednisone shot and pills should be working good by now.
Poor Mini. Goodness you have had your share of back problems.
Please give her lots of smooches and hugs from my gang and I.
Please keep us updated and know that we are here for you at anytime.
Keeping you all in our prayers for a complete speedy recovery.

I'm so glad that you recognized the signs and already were doing the crate rest. I'm sure that helped. I'm sending Mega Rayz from Houston to Oz for Mini's recovery. :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: Unfortunately, some of these little ones seem to have a genetic predisposition to back problems. I had a mother and daughter that both had back problems. Both lived to a ripe old age (mother died at 16 and daughter is still alive and will be 15 next month), but I had to be really careful with them.

Sending mega rays from Colorado. Actually once a disk has calcified it never really goes away as I understand it. Once calcified it stays calcified however it's a matter of the positioning of the calcified disk if it has moved to where it is putting pressure on the nerves or if it has ruptured (broken iinto bits) and the inflimation that generally goes along with the rupture that causes the back episodes. Of course I'm not an expert by any means so I could be all wrong here.

In any case we hope the steroids do their job and after a little forced rest period things get back to normal.

Thanks for all the Rayz! I am sure they are helping!

She is looking much happier this morning, I am sure the pain is easing.:) She is objecting more to the crate!:(

Loren, I tried Mini on Glucosomine before, and she had a lot of problems with it (she has severe allergies) so I don't think the Adequan would be good for her. The vet said I can double her dose of Ester C (gradually, up to bowel tolerance) as it may help.

She will stay in the crate until we go back to the vet tomorrow afternoon, and then we will see what he says.
We are really hoping that she is all well before Santa comes!:D

Sending more rayz for her recovery. :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: :rayz: . I'm sure she's feeling better and objecting more to being confined. Amanda was fine in the crate the first couple weeks after surgery, then she started feeling better and bouncing around in there. I was glad I had a small crate for her. She kept scaring me as it was.

Hi Pauline glad todays report is good. Now I know you of all people don't have to be reminded that Santa day will only be one week into the crate rest p[eriod so even if she is feeling good Mini will need to be a good girl and take it easy. Perhaps she can conider welcoming in the New Year with a little more freedom if all goes well.

Sending more rays.

Salmon oil is a natural anti-inflammatory so you might want to add that (it also helps with allergies :) ) Yucca, willow bark are good and there are also some other herbal supplements that don't have glucosamine/chondrotin that could help. We have Chief on one called "back relief" that we get from our holistic vet. Might want to see if you can get something like this.

Ester C, yep, increase to bowel tolerance and then back off a bit.

Just an update!

Mini is doing really great! She is in no pain, and seems to be back to normal. She is still in her crate, but when I take her out to potty i will let her have a little walk around the garden, and she is walking normally. She seems to have accepted the crate a bit better and is not barking so much, unless I leave the room!

She is going back to the vet this afternoon, so I will let you know what he says!

Thanks for all the rayz!

The vet visit went great! Her reflexes are normal, and he said she is doing fine.

He recommended we keep her in the crate for another few days, but he said to let her out, with supervision, for about 15 minutes or so, a couple of times a day, on a lead to prevent any running. I took her for a walk around the back yard, and now she is back in the crate asleep :)

Thanks again for the rayz!
