Maggie has been recovering very nicely from her back pain. In fact, we hadn't been forced to take a trip to the vets in a whole 2 weeks. That must be a record for us. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/shock.gif

This morning when I opened the door to Maggie's kennel, she tried to walk out and then collapsed. I immediately thought her back went out and my stomach fell. But, as I watched her a little closer, I saw that it was her back left leg that wasn't working. She wouldn't put any weight on it.

I carried her outside and tried to support her so she could go potty, but it didn't work. I carried her back inside and called the vet. By then, Maggie was starting to put some weight on the leg and was hobbling pretty fast to the door to go back outside to potty.

When we got to the vets, she was still able to stand and put some weight on her leg. Dr. Jon checked her out and thought her knee was slightly swollen. She was also running a fever. He figured that she must have twisted her knee but told me to keep a close eye on her in case the fever was caused by something other than the inflammation.

Thankfully, she hasn't lost her appetite, and her fever went away a short while after we got home. She is still putting a little weight on her leg tonight, so I'm optimistic that we won't have to go back to the vets to get an x-ray on Monday.

Lately it feels like Maggie is just falling apart! I've only had her for about six and a half months, and I've lost track of how many times we've visited the vet. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/rolleyes.gif

Oh blimey Vicky! I know how you feel - the amount of times lately I've taken that walk to the V-words recently. Don't worry, could it be if her back's been hurting she's been distributing her weight differently and now that's better, her knee is playing up a bit? Hope she has a good weekend and is right as rain by Monday - lots of rays swooshing their way over to you. Was slighly confused when I first read your message cos here "go potty" can mean go loopy-loop and just for a sec I thought .... I understand now of course, my coffee's kicked in!!

Poor baby. But on the good (?) side it sounds very likely that this is a temporary knee thing due to weight re-distribution. (Do dachsies have knees?) We'll be thinking of her and you send us an update ASAP. Good thing it's the weekend and Mom is home with her - nothing like a lap snuggle for healing purposes. - g

Thanks for the rays everyone. The weight redistribution idea makes sense to me. I can't think of anything else that would have caused a twisted knee. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/confused.gif

I decided not to take Maggie in for x-rays today, because her appetite has been fine and she doesn't seem to be in any pain. She'll put her leg down for balance sometimes, so I figure she just needs some more healing time before she puts all her weight on it again.

The thing that amazes me most about her twisted knee is just how quickly she adapted. She never whined about it--she just took off hopping on three legs at full speed! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif I have to keep reminding her that she's supposed to be resting and healing.

I'm sure we'll survive this. And, after we complete 3 more weeks of crate rest for the back, she should hopefully be 100% healthy again. I'm already prepared for that milestone after taking a trip to PetsMart yesterday for several new toys. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif
