I took Timber for a walk this morning, and he must have a scraped his paw pad on a rock or something and when we came home, he got blood marks all over the kitchen floor. Luckily, we have some cleaning stuff for pets and he is just fine now.http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/hapfac01.gif

Neosporin.........

Works wonders but, how do you keep them from licking it off? I had an idea but, have not tested it yet. I was gonig to get the neosporin and spray bitter apple on it, THEN put it on. I figure that bitter apple is mainly alcohol, it shouldn't hurt.

I have some A & A ointment that works wonders....it's actually for farm animals, but it works great on dogs and kids....my mother used it on us all as we were growing up.....

Bart hates it and is disgusted if I try to use it on him.....it has a tree-sappy smell...so the boys usually don't care to lick it off....but if they do, it's non-toxic...

Poor Timber! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/frown.gif Hope he's getting better. We went on a creek walk with the girls a few weeks ago and Dolly stepped on a thorn. She had the most pathetic look as she looked at me and held her paw up. I just plucked it out. Thank goodness no blood. When we had Sunny our foster dachsie, he and The Dollers got into a "discussion" and Sunny got nipped on the ear. I used a bit of peroxide to clean it and because I didn't have any cotton and didn't THINK of using paper towel at the time, used a half of panty liner It worked great!

Give Timber a snuggle for me.

I took Timber for another walk today and he scraped his paw again in the same exact spot. I think I'll wait a few days before taking him for another walk so his wound can heal. I used this stuff called Flush on a cotton ball. It stops bleeding right away.

Tiff that sounds like what happened to my Rudy about this time last year.

I got him as an older pup in near Thanksgiving, and since we live in Ohio, we didn't get many walks in during the cold months of December -February. When we started walking this happened because his paw pads were not calloused enough since he had been inside or on grass his whole life up to that point. The concrete is just too rough. We let it heal (w/ neosporin) and then began walking again, but I made him walk in the grass for half of the walk and gradually increased the time walked on the sidewalk. It worked like a charm, his pads toughened up and we have not had the problem since.

Timber hasn't had any walks since November, I think. I'll wait a little while before our next walk.

Tiff, after it is healed, you should start out with short intervals on concrete -maybe even just walk around your driveway with him to toughen his pads. They need to be tougher for his well being, and for your piece of mind too http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wink.gif.

I see you have been busy changing your kennel name and variety.....do you have a mentor yet that you can work with before you begin your own kennel someday??
