Hello, I have a dachshund that over the years has become overweight. I worry about her health, as well as her back. Does anybody know any good diets or exercise tips I should follow?

Thanks,
Tarbs

Hi Tarbs,

Just the usual general advice. First watch the treats especially people food. Cut back to smaller portions at meal time or consider one of the reduced calorie foods. Regular walks steadily increasing the distance as general health improves is a good starting point fore exercise. Be especially careful of overheating as the weather warms up. In warmer weather I always carry a folding water dish and water bottle on our walks. When it gets too hot walks are restricted to early mornings or late evenings to avoid the heat. Get some general advice from your vet they can help judge the overall health of your friend and give you a lot of advice on what is best for you individual buddy.

Good luck,

This is what we are doing with one of our dachsies, Henry, who needs to lose a little.....he gets 3/4 cup of a lower calorie food and 1/4 of green beans mixed together.....we have cut out cookies for the most part. We give the peeled baby carrots as treats. Any cookies are homemade low cal ones, but we have been sticking to the carrots for a while.

Walks are great exercise and at night we all run around the house (inside since it's cold outside) like crazy...chasing balls, stuffed nai animals, dachsies...anything to get some exercise in for the boys.....they also like hide and seek and such.....little games that get their frito feet moving....

My dachsie's love carraot & grapes as treats. They think they are getting the stuff we eat, but it is healthy and low in fathttp://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/wink.gif

Of course walks are always great, for the doggies and hoomans both!

Willi loves carrots too. I give them to him every day although he isn't overweight.

I know that during the winter months it is hard to exercise but every night we do manage to play a nice game of fetch through the living room hall.
