We were visiting my mother-in-law this past weekend in MD, and if some of you remember, we helped her adopt a sweet dachshund named Max a few months back.

Just in the last couple of days, Max has developed this "thing" on his nose. I have never seen anything quite like it before and I was hoping you all might have some experience with this.

It's very small. It's white or a creamy color. And it's external to his skin and fur. Chris' mom was wondering if it could possibly be a tick that has burrowed into his face. But I've never seen a white tick before, and I would think that if it were sucking blood, it would be red. Plus, it's Feb and it's cold in MD. I wouldn't think ticks would be around this time of year.

To me, it almost looks like a growth or little polyp or something. I can't even really describe it. When I first saw it, I thought it was a sleepy from his eye. It's about the same size and color as a sleepy, but it's attached to his sking. It looks like something you could just pick off, but I wouldn't dare touch it not knowing what it is. Like I said, it's attached to him, but yet completely external...just like this little thing that sticks out on his face. It kind of reminds me of a funny skin growth that sometimes happens on people's skin. But I'm just stumped on this one.

I know I'm not doing a very good job describing this, but have any of you ever run across anything like this? Have any of you had experience with ticks?

Any help would be appreciated.

Oh, it doesn't seem to bother him too much. He's not at it or anything. And he seems completely normal, healthwise.

Thanks
Karen

hmmm...It does sound like a growth. I think the best bet would be to have your vet take a look. Our foster, Dash, had several small tumors and the vet checked them over. She removed a couple during his dental...but others were left and she just took a needle and looked at the cells....nothing to worry about with Dash.

How old is Max? Dash is eleven and I wonder if age is an issue for tumors...as neither of our guys has these....they are still young.

Max just had his first birthday last week. He's a big 1!

Maybe it's a doggie wart our cocker had one on her nose. Just a thought!

Chris' mom took Max to the vet and it turned out to be a tick. I couldn't believe it. It just looked like a white lump or sac. I didn't see any legs or anything on it. I'm just shocked! I don't know if the tick creates a sac around where they're burrowing into the skin, or what. I'm going to do a little research, but does anyone know anything about ticks here?

Max should be ok, thank goodness. When he got fixed, the vet gave him a lyme shot...and that was about a month ago. So, I guess he'll be ok. Pretty scary though.
