I use drontal on my grown dogs only when i see signs of worms which is only usually after i have brought home a new bundle of joy other than that never. On puppies that we have brought home i have used Nemex or Panacur paste we just wormed Chloe with pan. works like a charm everytime. Best thing to do is if you think your dog has worms call the vet ask him if you can run a fecal sample by have them run a float they will probably give you a drontal tablet. You just want rule out other nasties like Coccidia ...YUCK!

Hi David,

We've never had to use a wormer. Do you suspect Aug of having worms?

my guys were wormed by the breeder as puppies and I have not had to do it since.

I do give my guys heartworm preventative year round. I use the Heartguard plus chewables, which is supposed to work on some other types of parasites as well.

He got wormed at the vet when we did a check up when we brought him home. Vet stuffed some pink stuff down his troat and said it was wormer.

How often is this stuff supposed to be done, once a month or once a year?

Aug is fine Mark, just want to make sure he stays that way as the weather warms up and we start doing some major hikes and trips.

Hi David,

In this area at least for adult dogs only give worm medication if there is a specific reason to suspect an animal is infected and test prove positive. We are on heart guard for eight months each year and it is suppose to kill and the intestinal worms that would commonly be found in this area.

We have used Sentinel for the past year.....it takes care of heartworms, other wormies, fleas...and so on...we have kept the boys on it year round and have had no problems with it...plus, it comes in a yummy beef flavored tablet! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

My guys are on Heartguard Plus year round. We have mosquitoes year round here. Heartguard doesn't get rid of tapes and doesn't do a very good job on whip worms either so if I see tape segments or somebody develops diarrhea that doesn't respond to medication, I will get the vet to check for whips and then worm them with panacur or drontal.

We've not had any worms thankfully, but Maggie had a round of Panacur last fall when we were trying to discover the cause of her weight loss and loose stool. <IMG SRC="http://dachsie.org/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm43.gif" border=0>
It was easy to use and Maggie tolerated it well. Unfortunately, worms were not the cause of her problem, but I wouldn't hesitate to use Panacur in the future.
