Hi All:
Have gone through a lot of the archives thinking I might find the information I need. No luck.

Here are my questions:
1. If I wanted to supplement our dogs' diet, as a preventative, with Glucosmine could I use the people supplement from the Vitamin section?

2. How much would you consider an appropriate daily dosage?

3. Yesterday I bought a bottle of MSM with Glucoamine.
MSM (Methyl Suffonyl Methane) providing 165 mg of Organic Sulfur
Other ingredients: Magnesium Stearate, Gelatin

They (capsules) contain _no_ yeast, wheat, corn, milk, egg, soy, glutens, artificial colors or flavors, added sugar, starch or preservatives.

Anyone with experience along these lines? If this is not suggested, no great loss, I can always use them myself. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

Thanks,
Roxane and crew

Hi Roxane,

Don't know. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/frown.gif

We do buy Glucosamine/Chondroitin for ourselves and the Vet gives us Glucosomine/Creatin for ours, but have no idea if they're interchangable. The dosage for pets is on the pet version label.

I wish I could help more, but I'm certain someone here knows for sure. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif

All of the breeders I know use something that they take a friend just told me about Sam's having a good joint complex I will figure out if it's cheeper and maybe try it if it is.

On the "dog health board" a vet recommends 250mg glucosamine morning and evening for the first month, then got to a maintenance dose of 250 once a day. She also suggested Vitamin E 200-250 mg and ester C 250 mg. I already have Chiefy on ester c and am seriously considering putting him on glucosamine and chondrotin.

Thanks all, this is very helpful.

Pk, Sam's Club is exactly where I bought the bottle.

It will be: One for Mommy, One for Daddy, One for Baylea, One for Greta, One for Boomer. The cats are on their own.

If Baylea and Greta turn into Great Danes, it is all your fault! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif

Much thanks,

Loren,

Just to make sure I'm clear . . . that's the recommeded doses for Mini's?

I would start with 250 mg glucosamine morning and evening for the first
month, then go to a maintenance dose of 250 once a day.

Personally I find GNC to be a huge ripoff. I get glucosamine online at www.vitaminshoppe.com (http://www.vitaminshoppe.com) at very competitive prices. It is primarily a human
supplement, though there are veterinary products. The plain ol' glucosamine
will do just fine.

Cheers,
Dr. Jean

** Mark, let me know what you decide...I'm still trying to decide what to do for Chiefy.

Loren,

I'll check to see what dosage we take for ourselves before deciding if it would simplify and be more economical.

I'll let you know.

Thanks,
Mark

I have heard quite a few experienced people over on the acme pet nutrition board that reccommend human supplements of msm and g/c over those made for pets.

I know they give something like 1000 -2000 mg of msm to 40 pound dogs or so, but cna't remember doses for G/C. I don't want to start my guys on them until I'm sure Roscoe is fully grown, but I will be adding it, probably this coming fall.

I would try maybe 1 cap a day for a mini my Vet who is a health nut says these doses can not hurt as much as they can help.By the way the doseage Awful gets will be incresed as she gets older since she injured her shoulder as a 1 year old had a infection in the joint and my vet now says her shoulder joint looks like rats ate it at 11 years old.She got Anaquin shots to get over that monthly and came back fine but age messes us all up.

Again, thanks all. This may be of interest. Rather than asking the girls to swallow an entire cap, I opened one for each, and powdered their breakfast kibbles. Was able to mix it well since their morning meal is moistened.
Stood back and waited for them to turn up their little noses. Aha, this is one time when the dachsies passion for food worked to my advantage. They scarfed their meals down as though they were a cut of rare prime rib!
Success. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/pink.gif
I was brave, swallowed mine whole.

Ah, yes, Mark, being brave carries such a heavy responsibility. I am expecting a commendation in the mail any day now. Or is that a pardon? http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif

We're okay, Andrea, just doing the Glucosamine thing as a preventative. I am more concerned about you New Englanders this morning. Sound like a good day to stay indoors, read a book and pet the pups.
Thanks all,

Roxane,

No, pardons are easy to come by. http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/lol.gif You're kind of bravery deserves a commendation, for sure! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif

Yikes, Mark, thought I had emailed you personally that it would not work, for all of your trying.
Two people, Owned by Chaucer and Jen have promised to print out an send me a hard copy.
It may be yesterday's news but I am anxious to see it. The raves have me on the edge of my chair.
Thanks,

my two dogs both get glucosamine every day with one of their meals....the one dog now deceased because of heart probs had not been able to get up stairs, jump on the couch..all the things Doxies love to do..i started her on Glucosamine and i swear within one week and until the day she died she moved with no problem at all. That prompted me to put Dixie on a preventative dose with each meal....i buy mine at Petsmart...its a powder which once you open the bag must be refrigerated or iti will spoil.
cost approx 21.00 and lasted me a easy 3 months doing two doxie mini's.

I feed Maximus the lowest dose of human Glucosamine I could find which is 250mg. Max is 15 lbs. It is in pill form, so I just wrap a little slice of cheese around it and he thinks its a fantastic treat. Sometimes he doesn't gulp it down and will spit out the pill, but with a little trickery, he always gets it down without him even knowing.

We ( me & husband & older dogs) take Gluco/Condro & MSM since the insurance Co. took me off Cellabrex it is my life saver.Plus all the dogs get get a Nutro food with Gluco/Condro the older ones get weight Mangement and the under 8 year olds get Lamb & Rice.My oldest had a injury in a sholder when she was 2 and the Gluco/Condro keep her going without a limp till she was 10 now it just keeps her going like me limp and all.

I only feed dry and I have Standards so they get a litle over 1/4 cup 2 times a day.The younger dogs get the same amount of the Lamb & Rice.I cut back a little if anyone starts to gain ANY I'm getting ready to show one of my 2 year olds this week end and after winter and a falsie she was on the plump side for me so I was cutting her back to just 1/4 cup and my hubby said " Oh dear Lily will starve if you keep this up" I said she will never starve she looked like a Red Pig she must have gotten up to at least 20 pounds which is more than she needs.
