My Petey, a long-haired red (AKC-registered) male dachsie, who is now 11 years old, ruptured a disk last September, and was immediately paralyzed in his hindquarters. Less than 36 hours later, he underwent a hemilaminectomy at L1-L2.
The prognosis was not good--the surgeon did not think Petey would ever walk again--but without the surgery, he would have died.
However, about 3 weeks after the surgery, following an intensive program of physical therapy combined with Petey's spirit-- he began to walk!
Although he is only about 75% of his normal self, we are grateful and not unmindful of this miracle.
Immediate surgical intervention is absolutely necessary in these cases.
