Here's a brief update on our adopted loverboy, longhaired Gaudi. He injured his back about a month ago in case you hadn't read earlier posts here.

He's doing better after a month, but is still nowhere near his normal hyperactive self. We have taken him a few times in the past week on walks on level ground but after 3 or 4 "blocks" he wants to be carried....this is from a doggie who normal *runs* endlessly on our 3+ mile long daily walks which are usually in hilly places.

He did climb the stairs (4 steps) up to the deck of our house yesterday when I got distracted by Wotan briefly. And he is sleeping in the "human's" bed with us, but we keep him in the middle (how he injured himself was by leaping off that bed instead of using the doxie ramp we have there). I hope he soon will be back to his normal self soon as I can't take him on my daily hikes now and I feel *so bad* when I have to leave him home alone and go with Wotan and Shakti....Gaudi sits at the door looking pitiful but I can't carry him long distances, so right now I can't take him unless my husband comes with.

Hi Bridget, has the Vet seen Gaudi? If so, what did he/she say? How old is Gaudi? At least he can still walk.http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/smile.gif Gosh, I wish I could help ya. Maybe Tom (Dutchman) here can help, as he has experience with this. I hope for the best outcome with Gaudi.

Your 'Dashing Dachshunds' page is GREAT! Nice job! I envy you for living in WA. (except recently with the earthquake!) and I bet San Juan Island is lovely. Did ya feel the quake?

Hi Bridget,

I'm not sure if I can be too much help on Guadi as Aggie never got home following her surgery and my folks girl with back problems must have been about thirty five years ago. The following advice applies if your vet has given the go ahead for all this increased activity. While I know it hard not to baby our little ones when they have been sick the Vet who taught our pet first aid class pointed out that our pets soon learn if they appear to still be hurting or injured they get extra attention. He warned people to be careful not to lavish too much extra attention on a pet recovering from an injury or the apparent recovery time can sometimes be longer than expected. I know one of my folks girls would occasionally have a shoulder problem and get some extra shoulder rubs when it was causing her problems. After she learned this you would sometimes see her limping to get a good rub then the next thing you knew she would be tearing around after a favorite toy (something she couldn't do it it was really hurting). We would also sometimes observer her limping holding up her left front leg when it was the right that had the problems. At some point a little touch love is sometimes required (I know hard to do when they give you the L@@K). Can you arrange a loop where you could try to increase Gaudi's walking distance a little each week. Perhaps start off with a quarter to half mile then increasing it a little more each time. Perhaps an out and back drop him off then out again so the rest of the crew gets a good workout. His back may be feeling better but he is out of shape or unsure of himself right now.

Good luck,

Tom and the boys (Frank and Tanner)

Thanks Dutchman/Tom for your reply and also Susan. I wrote a new update on Gaudi which I just posted under another thread.Gaudi did see a new vet today and that thread says what happened. Glad you liked my new web page Susan. Gaudi is about 6 we think (we are at least his 3rd owners....we adopted him from someone who got him from someone else). We didn't feel the quake much here as we are quite far from Olympia which was the epicenter. Thanks for your concern.
