HELLO,
IVE HEARD SEVERAL PLACES THAT BLACK AND TAN DACHSHUNDS SHOULD HAVE BLACK SPECKS IN THE TAN MARKINGS ON THEIR FEET. IVE ALSO HEARD THAT THIS IS UNDERSIREABLE, MUCH LIKE WHITE ON THE CHEST. WHAT ABOUT WHITE TOES? IF ANYONE KNOWS WHAT MARKINGS ARE FAULTS OR UNDERSIRABEL ON A SMOOTH BALCK AND TAN PLEASE LET ME KNOW. THANKS,

Here is the quote from AKC dachshund standarts:
"Two-colored Dachshunds include black, chocolate, wild boar, gray (blue) and fawn (Isabella), each with tan markings over the eyes, on the sides of the jaw and underlip, on the inner edge of the ear, front, breast, inside and behind the front legs, on the paws and around the anus, and from there to about one-third to one-half of the length of the tail on the underside. Undue prominence or extreme lightness of tan markings is undesirable. A small amount of white on the chest is acceptable but not desirable. Nose and nails--in the case of black dogs, black; for chocolate and all other colors, dark brown, but self-colored is acceptable."
No specks of any kind metioned in the standart.

My black and tans (Tess and Lucy) had black lines on the toes, but as they have gotten older the black has almost disappeared.
I never thought of it as a fault, because most young black and tans I have seen, have these marks.

Many black and tans have black on each toe; many have what appears to be a human thumbprint on the top of their foot and it can be combined with the black on the toes. It is perfectly acceptable and the standard just didn't find a need for it to be addressed.
White on the feet is not acceptable/desirable but is common as a graying process.
Does this help?

Muddy or poorly delineated markings are not desirable- but I've never heard of black spots on the toes being a problem (and I'll happily accept Cindi's word on that). They certainly aren't required- or specifically desired.
White toes on a solid is a big no-no... and would make me question whether or not the pup truly is a solid.

Muddy markings, in my understanding, are those with lots of black hairs intermingled so as not to be truly lined or spotted but tending towards appearing boared (not really since the hairs aren't banded) in the tan areas and making it truly difficult to delineate the tan points. Some black and tans are that way and it does detract from the markings significantly TO ME. But if you will look at some black and tans with the spots and or lines on their toes, you will notice that usually the tan part is very clean otherwise.
Just to be sure I was correct I just picked up Decker who is a very clean black and tan wire with crisp face markings (although the tan points there are graying <g>). I had to roll back the hair on his feet and lo and behold, each toe had a black stripe and there is a faint thumbprint on top of his foot BUT they are all covered with the tan hair from him being wire. And he is a clear black and tan basically.
Clean, not muddy markings, are preferred by most breeders as the expression is cleaner and I would assume (although don't know for sure) that if you bred muddy to muddy you could eventually lose the markings. However, there are people out there that will accept little tan markings to no tan markings (albeit incorrect)....and there are those dogs being shown....eventhough it is incorrect <G>
