Just thought I would share this with anyone who hadn't heard this one. We got this test from our vet to see if our last dachsie was having back problems. She wasn't one to complain so it was really hard to tell if she was in pain. Anyway, here's the test:
Run your finger down the spine with a bit of pressure. If there's no problem, this test won't hurt. If there is a problem, you'll see your little guy flinch.
We haven't had any problems with Bugsy's back but I just do the test every once in a while anyway. Can't hurt and I'm hoping I'll know about any problems if Bugsy also turns out to be a stoic little fella too.

Another tip. While your dog is standing, take a foot and bend it down so that the top of the foot is on the floor. A normal dog will immediately correct his foot to the right position...paw pads on the floor. A dog with some beginning nerve damage will not correct the foot and leave the top (knuckles) on the floor. A hint from my old vet.
