View Full Version : How do you define housebroken?

Since we're having a good streak, but I don't dare risk the wrath of the curse of the board, thought I'd ask the question this way....

When do you consider a dachshund housebroken?

OK-- I bite. I wouldn't consider them housebroken unless they went at least 6 months. That means I have one housebroken dog at my house = Lucy. Tess is pretty good though, until we visit my borther!

This is a good post, what is house broken? With mine I define 2 stages. The first was with paper training. Being confined to one room and using the papers consistently w/o the accidents. Then the second part of the stage is giving them the freedom to roam in other rooms, but going back to the papers to do business. The association of urge back to their room to use them. My two older ones of course are trained to that association 100%. My two younger ones at this point no way. They still have to be told to go to the papers when they have to go.

The second stage is the association of seeing lease and harness for their walks to do business. If I do not have papers down my older two will hold it till I walk them. My younger ones now associate the lease and harness with outside business but still do not have the mental image or control especially Mirri holding it. Merlin is getting to that stage now. Magic and Misty were consistent with this training by 1 1/2 years. Merlin being a rescue and nearly two when I got him (not housebroken either) is doing a fast catch up. Mirri at 9 months seems to following the pattern of my older two at that age.

I have kept consistency, schedule, and commands pretty reguarly so my strange training method has worked. Also, the two younger ones are following the example of my older two by example. When I can store the nature's miracle instead of keeping it handy, then my four pack will be totally trained.

I just bought a replacement for my 5-6 year old little green machine. Growing up I remember having one very house broken little girl. She could have the full run of the house and you could leave her for 12-14 hours with never an accident in the house.

with a VERY housebroken boy. Chief is a camel...never an accident unless he is sick. He has actually held it so long that when he finally peed, he couldn't hold his leg up long enough to finish the job..had to stop and start again. Talk about peeing a river.

I didn't vote, because I don't have a clue, but ours use the "potty box" every time now, (at 10 months) with the usual dachsie "exceptions." Trenyce still pees on soft things when no one is watching, or she's left all alone and gets mad. Both used to be so busy playing that they wouldn't take the time to run in the other room to potty, but that has ended.

Just a couple of days ago the pups and I were playing on the bed, Trenyce stopped, sniffed, looked at me, and took a couple of odd steps to the chaise at the end of the bed. I asked "go potty?" and set her on the floor. That was it, off she went to the other room, like an angel!

Last night Ruben and I rushed off to "school" before he had his after dinner poop, and the little darling waited until we got home 2 hours later, so he could use his potty. What a good boy.

As for the Bissell Little Green? It's still in the spare tub some of the time, and the closet some of the time.

I Voted for 1 Month. I really think if Charlie has had NO accidents in 30 days then pretty much it's there. Just like kids. When they're trained they wear underwear but every once in a while between 2 and 4 years old they might wet their pants!!! They're still trained - just a 'lil accident.

I voted for I month, cause when Willy finally got the connection of leash, harness, outdoors, potty...he has been very good about going to the door & waiting til I get everything on me & him to go out. If he simply can't wait, he will go use his paper. Like most Dachshies, he prefers to go out...can snoop around, pretend he's hunting a favorite spot to go in...then come right back where he started to actually go!!!

Mitzi is trained and only has an accident when it's my fault. I like me not coming home so that is understandable.

Dudley was doing really good until we got loads of rain. Just yesterday he had two poo accidents that were totally his fault! The 2nd one was because I gave in a let him play with his ball and he is so obsessed with it he didn't want to take the time to go outside. THE BRAT!

They all have accidents here and their. But the big thing is when we are right here to let them out. Con will start playing and just seem to forget. He does have a problem that the vet is checking into (Cushings Disease) was my biggest fear. But he doesn't seem to have it according to his blood work. Although he has had a few of the symptoms. It is scary though, and he knows what outside and go potty mean. Now that it is warmer it will be better for him to go out.
Chewy on the other hand the warmer the weather and he forgets what a duh did you say just check it all out. Oh a duh I think I will come in with the others. Then back at the door, hey you didn't let me go out to go potty! EEEErRRrrrrRRRRrrrr!!!!!
What can we say ya just got LOVE that Big Boy! :sarcasti: :D

I didn't vote either because Schnitzel is only 10 months and I would be happy with even 2 months accident-free. These past 2 weeks have brought 2 accidents, which we don't understand. Before that, it was a month accident-free, and it only happened because I had friends over and wasn't paying attention. Completely my fault. But, why is it that sometimes she can hold it for 5 hours out and about in the apt and at other times 3 hours? Baffling.

Moving to a new apt with new carpet in a couple of months. Think that will help? I don't hold too much faith in the Nature's Miracle stuff. We have a very small apt, so she tends to pee in the same place without sniffing. Learned behavior I guess.

We're doing pretty good here - two months, and just two accidents in the same day (right in the middle of the two months). It was rainy that day.

The past few days have been really rainy here, and so far so good (shhh, don't tell them I said that!). In fact, I ran out for about an hour, and when I came back, the boys didn't want out. I thought for sure we'd have an accident, but they didn't. Just waited until they did want out and then went to the door! Are we there? Do I dare hope? It sure is about time - my guys are 13 and 14 months old.

We'll see if I've spoken too soon, but I am daring to hope.........

I couldn't answer because thier was no option to note if I am house broken.
If they are confined in the kitchen with no rugs they can make it 12 hours. If I leave a rug on the floor I can be guarenteed a surprize when I get home. If I leave them have run of the house Rusty always leaves me a little round spot on the carpet. We have a doggy door so when we are home they are very good about going out as long as the lights are on outside, it is not raining and the lawn is mowed.

If it is completely dry outside, the yard is nicely mowed, the planets are lined up, and I hold my mouth just right, we might go 3 days without an accident. We buy Resolve in the economy size and our next home will have a moppable floor, no more carpet. The best one is Frankie and thats because he cant pee without being expressed!

Darn near any change in household!

Did I say REMODELING? :D

Oh I'm so happy, sort of...

The construction of two new rooms is done except for the little decorating details, but the brats have rebelled with all of the changes in their home! People in and out, people who don't always give them attention! Now we're getting peeing on the carpet, and pooping behind things (privacy has once again become an issue) Am I thrilled we TILED both the new living room addition and the new bathroom? You bet! Are we ripping out carpet and putting wood in the living room? As soon as we can.

Monsters! They have a litter box right in the kitchen, and when they are in their huge pen in the basement, they ALWAYS use it.
Trained? I think we are trained-to keep one eye on our two at all times!

Cricket is wonderful but Bella is a prima donna...she WONT go outside if the grass is wet, long, or just not pretty enough....but in her defense, her only accidents are poop.....I have had to use a sprayer w/bleach to clean up her "poop spots" on the floor so that the smell isn't there and she can't go in the same spot twice.....Cricket is trying to teach her the ropes but I don't think he likes it much....:flush:

Well, my Fritz always felt free to heist his leg anywhere. Heidi never had an accident unless she was sick, and then she was mortified! In fact, if she had to throw up, she would try to get outside, or at least to tile floor! Gretl was a submissive ppeer until about age 2. Siglen does not like to have accidents - almost another Heidi! Brekke is still a submissive ppeer - sigh! Sorcha had a lot of accidents, but I think some were due to her undiscovered (and unknown at the time) brain tumor. Julia B.

I'm so glad I have hardwood flooring under my living room carpet, because if I ever have to remove it I will never put carpet down again. I'd rather have pretty tile or hardwood with marine spar varnish and a few washable throw rugs. This would reduce the stress of constantly watching for bathroom cues. Marlene and others are right - I'm not certain there's ever a time you can be positive they're "housebroken". My new doxie, Gala, doesn't like being on the floor. She seems to feel safer on a chair or sofa, so when I see her looking like she wants to get down, I take her out. Once outside, she's very good about doing her business. Last night she woke me in bed at about 3 AM - she was acting like she wanted to jump down. I took her outside with Cookie following and sure enough she had to poop. Must have had an upset tummy, but am I glad I paid attention to her behavior!! Barbara :flower:

Everytime Maite and I think Milo is already housebroken, he has an "accident" in a new place. We wonder if he does it on purpose ...

I'm happy to report, that Maisie only peed in the house once so far - not bad for a puppy-mill reject, ey ? :D

Other than that: My previous Dachsie could go to bed at six at night and sleep until noon the next day without having to go out. (Especially in the winter she liked to hibernate like that. I had to "force" her outdoors. )

I said "One month" also.
Less than 1 month I'm not sure if the pup's trained or if the human is trained. If you make it past 1 month with no accidents I think you can breathe a sigh of relief....

My Penny caught on very easily, and I never have to worry about her at home or when we visit. Heidi, on the other hand is not quite as good. If I get lax, I may have a problem. Maggie has health problems that require her to wear a diaper or lie on waterproof pads when she snoozes, so she falls into a different category...

I don't believe there is a definition when it comes to dioxies and potty training   :sofunny: :sofunny: Is there????? I consider pups housebroken when they always go to their appropriate area to potty - not just randomly around the house.

My way is unusual because I felt the need to train for inside or outside potty due to hurricane weather when we can't go out.

I was so proud when I had Oscar trained to go outside!! But! during heavy rainstorms I had to rethink what I did since we couldn't go outside!! :pullhair:

I had to retrain him to go on pee pads when necessary. He's a good little man and he learned to use the pads again - or go outside. :hearts:

Now they will both go on the pee pads when they are down and will also go outside. I never have to worry about them going at random in the house. They will ring the bell that's hung on the front door if the pads are not down. They never soil in their crates.

Housebroken to me means absolutely no 'accidents' in the house. I don't believe thats ever a real possibility for Dachshunds in general. Tia's pretty good, but there are those times that she doesn't feel like going outside because of thw weather or something. Rb Jesse was really good though, she only started having accidents in the house as she got older and had to be let outside all the time.

Housebroken...just wondering if that is possible here at the weenie ranch...

I am in the process of replacing all the carpet with hard surfaces easy as possible to clean...we use newspaper & puddle pads...if I am lucky enough to have more than two foster moms who are willing to potty train I feel blessed. We are putting in dog doors in hope we can do some training in using them. The rescue kids are pretty good. We only have 5-6 accidents a day here...The really hard one are the “retired working ladies”, most who have not been privileged to being in the house. Well I don't need to tell you about the intact boys and those newly neutered...we use dozens of bellybands to help with the tagging and some potty training...

I am looking for a real good cleaner. Have tried most including odo-ban, I stopped using it due to constant sneezing by the doxies and me. Now we are using the Oxyfresh Pet Deodorizer and their laundry soap. It is very expensive but all natural, does a good job... all suggestions are welcome.

To me, housebroken will be when Dragon 'asks' to go outside.

Are you kidding!!!! What is "accident free". It's all attitude.......Gabbie used to follow me to the basement when I did laundry and if I started taking the clothes out of the dryer and wasn't paying attention to her, she'd pooped right by me feet!

I think if a dachsie is 95% housetrained, that's a darn well-housetrained dachsie!! My two are adults, and on rare occasions, will still have an accident.

Some of these answers are hilarious! Glad to see that everyone can have a sense of humor in the midst of these "accidents"! Sammy pooped on the living room carpet the other night. I had just had them outside, but it was raining so Sammy refused to go while he was out there. He was quietly following me around the house...wouldn't let up. Then I found out why. Otto had pooped outside, so I knew this one was Sammy's. I quietly went and got a kleenex, picked it up, showed it to Sammy and calmly and quietly said, "What did you do?" He lowered his head and slowly walked over to the bed where Otto was laying, and laid down beside him. He knew what he had done.

Skyler is housebroken. I think his last accident (I don't count oopses due to illness) was so long ago, well over a year.

Jesse, I'm starting to think he may NEVER be housebroken.

Schatzie, who is almost 6, is like a camel, and will hold it for hours on end and hasn't had an accident in years. Daisy Ray, who just turned 1, is another delight. Just when she has been accident free for a week or two, will bless you with a puddle the size of Montana in the same room you are sitting in. While she will bark at you to go out, and sometimes give you a poop, will more often than not, go out to eat leaves and snoop. The little lady would much rather bestow you with her little treasure behind the sofa (in the privacy and comfort of her heated living room) and then clean up the evidence. No wonder she had poopy breath!

To me housetrained is being 100% reliable:0210: about NOT doing their business in the house.
I DREAM :zzzz:of that day, long :rolleyes:for that day, pray:pray: for that day, and HOPE:think: that that day comes soon:thumbsup:!

Our first dog NEVER had an accident after he was about 4 months old....I thought housetraining would be a breeze like it was before......WRONG:faint:!!!

I think we have finally reached the true housebroken point!:cheer: Somebody has an accident once or twice each year but it has been several months since that has happen and Molly no longer needs to be crated when we are not home. She also does not need to be rushed outside first thing in the morning when she wakes up. She finally has control and the ability to hold it until she is let out. She also tells us now that she needs to go. Life is good! She has always been pretty good about going outside. We just missed her signals now and then in the beginning. Then I think it really is just keeping a routine as much as possible. Funny thing is that was her problem in her old home....she went all over the house. Never barked there though! Now she barks like crazy but she's potty trained!:happy030::happy030::happy030:

:wahooo:Molly! Way to go girl:hearts:.
D is so much better about it. She is now 10months old and has had one pee in the house in the last 2-3 months. I heard her barking and asked our son to let her out, I thought he did but when I heard her barking again, I reminded him to let her out. I finished up painting and went downstairs to the kitchen. He came up to me and said "Uh....Mom, D went pee in the LR." I was mad at him because he admitted he didn't let her out because he was "busy" playing X-Box! So, I guess I shouldn't really even consider that pee as an accident since she was trying to tell us.
In fact, he has left her out of her crate when he leaves the house because he "forgot" to put her back in the crate when he left and I was at work:faint:. When I came home both times there was no accidents anywhere. Just a happy go lucky D meeting me at the door with a tail wagging like you wouldn't believe. I know there weren't any accidents because our first floor has no carpet and the gate to the carpeted upstairs was closed so she couldn't have gotten up there.
We do still crate her when we are gone though. I don't think she is 100% ready to be left uncrated.

:yahoo: I was so proud of Maddie yesterday! She held it for 9.5 hours while I had to work late! She turns 1 next month. Since she was about 3 or 4 months old she hasn't had an accident in the house unless she's in her crate/pen and physically cannot get herself outside to go (which is our fault, not hers). We were very diligent taking her out often as a puppy.

So I ordered an area carpet to fit inside the living room 12 X 14, Oct.31, 2007. And we had to put dear sweet F. Dudley Hershey Kiss down (back problem) Nov.15, PAIN no more! Me cry...
And then we go see little puppies, too cute to leave there, you know it! So we got the little D. Rebel Star, only 6 wks old, (yes too small to leave his mommy.) That was Nov.19, 2007 and alas the new carpet with binding just like I wanted arrives on Dec. 7, 2007.
AND SO TODAY IS: 4.4.09 and that carpet cut up and trashed. We scrubbed it every 6 weeks, Carpet: $500 , scrubber $200 ?, Gallons of neutrilizer $$$? And now you should see the bottom of it! YUK! See I always said I did not want carpet. But, at the time I thought maybe now is the time. I WAS WRONG!
Train the mommy and daddy I say!
