We are back from the vet. The orthopedic specialist at our vet's office was the one we were able to see. He doesn't really think it's a back problem but the muscles in Tanner's back seem tight. We left the office with a supply of Rimadyl and $42 poorer. An office visit at $35 and $7 for the drugs. We have instructions to keep an eye on him continue to restrict activities and give then a call immediately if I notice any changes for the worse. They would appreciate a call back even if he gets better. If there are any changes or this does not appear to help then they will do x-rays. They will be there on Monday (labor day) and said to call any time even if we were to experience a major problem since a referral from them might get a neurologist to the VTH hospital faster than if we went there directly.

Tanner's walk is fine, he is lifting his leg to pee and refuses to let you put his feet into a knuckle position so those are all good signs that this is most likely not a back but rather a muscle problem. Dr. Soto said it sounds like I know most of the things to look for with back problems.

Now the big job is trying to convince Frank that Tanner has to take it easy for a while. I think Frank is going to tell me it's time to trade in that kid. After all Frank will think "If I can't wrestle with him and all he is going to do is eat and get some of the attention I deserve then why keep him". Tanner is taking a nap in his kennel next to my desk Frank is most likely still clawing at the floor of his kennel crying because he was left home alone.

Thanks for all the support.

I'm so glad to hear that Tanner is doing better and the report from the vet sure sounds encouraging. My boys can sure sympathize with Frank. I don't know what ours would do if they were separated - even for a day. They are so close and both of them send 'hurry up and get better' kisses to Tanner and 'hang in there' kisses to Frank. Keep us posted about Tanner and he is in our prayers.

Tom, I just saw these threads -- I'm sorry to be so late in sending along http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/rayz.gif for Tanner! But it sounds as if the news is pretty good! HOORAY!!!!! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/bounce.gif

Have you tried massage? Farfie loves his massages--he just goes all limp and goofy, his flews fall back, his tongue sticks out...pretty hilarious, actually! But I'll bet that would help with his muscle tension!

Good luck, and keep us posted, please!

Tanner is like anew boy on his meds. The vet warned me that sometimes it becomes difficult restricting their activities because they start to feel so good. Now we will just have to wait and see what happens when he goes off it next week. Starting yesterday morning it has once again become a struggle to prevent Tanner from taking flying leaps from the bed. This morning he was taunting Frank a little like he sometimes does when he is ready to play hard. He is also starting to climb my leg for atention. Thank you all for you support.

So far so good. He finished his last dose of rimadyl last night and is still going strong. He has been trying to start things up with Frank for a few days now and it's hard to keep things quiet. The too of them go tearing from one end of the house to the other chasing each other. He is also flying in and out the front door. He is back climbing up my leg for attention and standing up on my lap to talk things over with me face to face. Now we just have to see what happens as the meds work their way out of his system. A couple of people have suggested taking him the the acupuncturist at the CSU VTH if he continues to have any problems. Teresa my DRCO (dachshund rescue of Colorado) friend takes two of her dogs there for treatments.
