It´s been awfully long since I wrote anything to this board and I´m not sure if this is a good time to do it, because such
horrible things have happened. But anyhow small miracles happen all the time and I would like to share it with some people who can understand. I´m not sure if I ever mentioned that I was going to move with my six dogs and two children to a house of my own in the town that was within ten miles of the place where I used to live. I still live at the rim of the forests, but now I have neighbours, roads, regular bus lines etc. in my neighbourhood and I simply love this place. The only problem was that the fence was not ready in time, in fact the guys who were supposed to build it never made it, and like I had foreseen, Little Princess managed to escape and was hit by a car. She had injuries all over her little body, many broken bones and worst of all, there was a fracture in her spine and an injury to the spinal cord. She spent three weeks in the Helsinki University Animal Hospital, she was operated three times and now she has been at home for three weeks. Although she could feel the touch with her hind legs, she was not able to stand or move them even a little in the beginning. We have been doing our excercises every day and practised standing and today was the great day: SHE WAS FINALLY ABLE TO STUMBLE ON HER FEET FOR A FEW SECONDS TO GET A TREAT !!!. Now I feel she might be able to walk again some day. We still have a long way to go, but I hope you will send her a lot of rayzzz to make her feel better. Well, to tell the truth, Little Princess has never lost her courage, even if the rest of us have. She still keeps the younger ones in order and tries to argue with her sister.

Hi Tina,

Never a bad time to post to this group. It sounds like Little Princess has been getting the best of care. We will all keep her in our thoughts. We all know what a fighter she must be and the fact that she is starting to stand is very good news. Does she have bladder control or do you have to express it for her? If she had bladder control that is another big plus. Even if she is never able to walk on her own again if she is not in pain and has a positive attitude many dogs are able to lead long healthy lives with the assistance of a cart. A site you might want to check our for some more good information can be found at http://www.abledogs.net/ Please keep us updated on her progress. And yes the same strong will that can make training a dachshund pup can also result in many a miracle cure.

Best wishes and rays,

Tom and the boys (Frank and Tanner)

Bless both yours and Little Princess' hearts. I am so sorry about her accident but I am glad to hear that she is making progress. Love and that stubborn doxie attitude can go along way in producing progress where a "meeker" furbaby might not. You are definitely in my thought. My "girls" snd lots of get better kisses to little Princess. Please keep us updated!

Tina, our thoughts are with you and Little Princess. Take a look at Murphy's World (http://geocities.com/murphys_world) . If our website says anything, its never give up. Once her wounds are healed enough, see about swimming therapy. That is what we attribute most of Murphy's recovery. That and the stubborness of a beagle! http://dachsie.org/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif Just the facts that she has feeling in her hind quarters and can stand are excellent signs that she will recover.

Good Luck,
Murphy's Dad

Little Princess seems to be recovering little by little and even if her hind legs don´t work properly, she is not the least discouraged. Today was the first day she was able to urinate by herself and yesterday she scared me to death by coming down the stairs of our clinic. I have taken her with me to work to be able to make her stretching and walking excercises. She stays in our little coffee room upstairs and yesterday somebody left the door open. Boy, she was fast; I did not even see how she came down, but she did not seem to hurt herself, as she instantly tried to rise to her feet to escape. She did not whine or yelp but I yelled as in mortal danger. The floor was too slippery, however, so I caught her easily, crated her and she was sulking the rest of the day. Today she has been very active, she has been standing several minutes while having her meals and even tried a little bit of walking in a self-made harness. She also wanted to play and wrestle with the other dogs, so she does not seem to be in pain. But she can surely scare me to death at least once in a week...

Sounds like Little Princess is going to live a long life. One that you will treasure even more after her close call. There is just no stopping these strong will dachsie kids.

Best Wishes,
