Mtizi gave us quite a fright last Saturday night. We went into the city and were gone about 6 ½ hours. Mitzi was just fine when we left home in fact she went right into her kennel with out a treat. She was running and playing before we left that morning (we have a new game called want me to blow in your nose which she loves) but when we arrived back home I let Emily out then went to let Mitzi out she couldn't stand or walk and was shaking all over. It was terrible. We called the vet's office of course it was closed but they always leave a message about which doctor is on call. It wasn't Mitzi's Dr. Trent but the senior vet at the clinic who now mainly works with larger animals. We ended up calling his pager four times and Dr. Trents house just to make sure he wasn't home. Finally the vet called us on his cell phone, he could hear us but we couldn't hear him. About three tries later we finally connected and he told us to meet him at the office because the problem needed to be cared for right away. Let me tell you that was the longest hour and 30 minutes of my life waiting for the call and then for him to get to the office. By the time Mitzi was checked out she was doing a little better she could actually stand and she even took a few steps to me before she fell over. The vet did the foot test and she passed but on her back right side she did it slower then the other three. He checked out her spine and she didn't have any pain but she was standing funny. It looked like she was curved or caved in on her right side. The vet thought she was holding herself that way to protect whatever was hurting. He gave her two shots one was Torbugesic at 2mg and the second was Dex/Sodium Phos (I think that both of these are anti-inflammatory) then he kept her overnight so on Sunday when there would be help he could take ex-rays. They didn't show anything at all. So we still don't know what really happened. Mitzi got two more shots and had to stay again on Sunday where she started to eat, drink and all. Yesterday she had bloody stools so now she is on medicine and Hills i/d dog food. She is getting back to her old self so it's hard to keep her down cause she likes to jump on and off things even when she isn't supposed to.
I think she might have twisted her right back leg when trying to get comfortable in the kennel and then laid on it wrong the whole time we were gone. I hope this never happens again.
One good thing is now I know that she is a good girl without me around strangers because they just love her at the vet's office. Of course I knew she was going to have to stay so I took her red bear with us. When I put her into her kennel along with her bear she tried to follow me because she didn't want to stay. It was so hard having to leave her there especially with those sad eyes staring at me. But $228.69 later Mitzi is at home being hand fed canned dog food because she thinks it is yucky and that is the only way she'll eat any of it (NO she isn't spoilt rotten!!).
